joining live to neutral at one end and testing from the other is showing a short, how can this be possible? sounds like some sinister forces are at work

if its purely a learning curve then i would trace the route the cable follows (continuity readings are usually the quickest way to do this) then start disconecting from each fitiing and testing back over until the low reading resurfaces then you know the last section connected is where the lower value is occuring.

all this can be very confusing to start but eventually becomes pretty obvious.

there is no borrowed neutral or any 2way switches, nice easy bit of fault finding to start with. oh and all other mcb's are off. got the part p doctor book delivered 2day, will have a good read i think. thanks for all your help

When you say all the other MCB are off does that mean you have left the neutral connected while testing?

If thats the case disconnect the neutral and give it another try !!!
