Hi all, got c.u full of rcbos for my upcoming assessment in Jan.

My question is can I remove the cables from from the terminations of the rcbo to test for Ir and still keep the assessor happy?

The reason I'm asking is because:
1) the probe from my fluke won't reach far enough into the live terminal to test (wylex rcbo).
2) am I correct in thinking that because rcbos are single pole anyway so a reading would be taken through the rcbo via the neutral as its not isolated so can't test at 250v.

Any ideas guys.

agreed. don't go puttring 500V.dc on the RCBO. they don't like it up 'em, mr. mainwaring.

and what's wrong with the bang test. it worked fine for donkeys years before some pratt invented digital test instruments. :81:

I would not expect the assessor will ask you to IR every cct.

When he/she asks you to carry out any tests fully explain what you are doing and in the case of the RCBO re IR testing refer back to GN 3 re testing voltage sensitive equipment and explain why you are removing the line & neutral conductors prior to the test !

In reply to previous posts yes I did test by removing the cables from the terminations. I was asking due to the fact that in GN3 all cables need to be terminated prior to testing that was all.

GN3 is exactly what it says it is, A GUIDANCE NOTE. Common sense and manufacturers instructions come first. The RCBO manufacturers instructions will say something along the lines of DO NOT INSULATION RESISTANCE TEST.

Cheers..........Howard

Sockets will probably be ok on one, a little inconvenient in the event of a fault though, I'd probably like a 7th rcbo in. Wonder if hes linked...

This lesser known technique can be used for RCBO protected circuits, allowing a high current test to be used. It's a good one to have in the bag...
