just having a scan through the internet and came across this ukraine russia situation, all these sactions being imposed etc doesnt really bother us but i was reading that Ukraine have applied to become part of NATO, if im not mistaken and the application is successful then as Ukraine has been "invaded" constitutes an act of war and therefore NATO members i.e USA .UK etc have an obligation to fight ? am i right

Yes, it certainly used to be so unless they've changed the charter we could be in for big trouble. The situation in the middle east with IS doesn't help either.

I'm not sure that Russia would be stupid enough to provoke the West, whilst the plethora of armed "idiots" in the Middle East don't think at all so its them that I'm very concerned about.....

The yanks are tougher than putin, if things get out of hand he will have to back down or he will face humiliation, his weapons are second world war at best, and he won't use a nuke on his own doorstep.

Putin isn't mad enough to start throwing nukes around but he is mad enough to keep on pushing which may end up in a conventional war.
If the IS scum get their hands on them we will have a massive problem because they don't care enough not to use them. That's why they have to be stopped. If they have $2 Bn as they claim that could be enough to persuade Kim Jong Il to part with one of his. OK it would be a small yield explosion but a nuke is a nuke. The west would have no other option then but to turn the whole region into glass.

IS pose the biggest threat, hence the security level being upped within the last couple of days...

They are truly off-the-scale and I don't think we'll see a response of any significance until we get some home-soil pain (think of poor Lee Rigby)

Russia will (eventually) agree to diplomatic deal..

Just my view...

I agree that IS are the biggest threat but the raising of the threat level was nothing more than a diversion so that Cameron might not have to answer difficult questions about Rotherham or Douglas Carswell.
Get everyone whipped up about the big bad bogey man and other things melt into the background. Even Theresa May has said there is no intelligence to suggest an attack is imminent, why raise the threat level to "attack very likely" then?

He won't be daft enough to take on the west in a conventional war, he may try it on but he will back down if 500,000 allied troops start defending western europe with all our technology.

sov aint stupid (well we better hope not our troops have enough on their plate) and again its about oil/gas theres an extra benefit of unrest causes price increases fuel will go up again.

The first Tom Clancy book I ever read, Red Storm Rising, gave a scenario which is scarily similar to what is going on now. Unrest in the middle east, a Russian leader needing to flex his muscle to impress his people etc.
The world needs to unite to get the IS situation resolved once and for all and then need to put their heads together to make sure the world becomes a better place. The US and UK must not act on their own, China, Russia and the Saudis (if possible) need to do it.
