There will be no 3rd world war, angela merkel is too reliant on russian gas, there have been 2000 killed in the current ukranian civil war massacres on both sides, ukraine was supposed to be buffer zone between east and west, the current backing of kiev forces by us/west has angered russia (a russian diplomat said it would be like the russian government giving arms and funds to alex salmond and being surprised at a british response) the russians will go in reassert their dominance in the region and agree a peace plan for ukraine (gunboat diplomacy)

We're all reliant on Russian gas and it's that reliance that could be the straw that breaks the camel's back. If Putin were to decide to turn the taps off then it could mean that German boots find themselves on Russian soil again.
If Ukraine do join NATO then to the best of my knowledge the existing members are bound by the charter to join in their defence if they are attacked.
That said however, Russia is dependent on the money that comes from the sale of their gas so anything which puts that in jeopardy will probably not be done.

The Russian/Ukraine crisis is really down to russia in recent events but has a century of foundation. The recent esculation stems from back in 2008 from the US and EU ... the risk of Ukraine actually becoming a Nato member along with Georgia which would have undermined Russia Nuclear capability which is one of the key stones of it power position in the world, now the absorbtion of crimea was a move to ensure a disarrayed Ukraine won't join NATO as getting the majority control over a very strategic black sea was key to keeping NATO at bay. Adding to this the collapse of the Ukraine government as Ukrainians protested against edging away from EU (Russian and Ukraine politics putting the peoples choice last) created a government set on getting closer ties with the EU and possible NATO membership - very ironic as it was Russia that originally instigated the move away from EU which set off a chain of events that ended up with Russia trying its best to salvage from the fallout of its own creation.

What you see on the news is very politically biased and WW3 is not really on the cards here as Putin is no crazy mad leader he's is a very strategic one, what we see on the news is Russia invading here and there but tbh if you believe it is as simple as this then you don't get it, we as nations have all done the same with other countries yet russia never poke its affairs in at us but now we have America trying to weaken a world power house and because it hasn't gone to plan panic has set in on all sides ... from the civilian plane to the crimean takover its all a game of chess and if lives are lost to get you into a winning position then thats politics ... the cage has been rattled but the dust will settle with Russia in a better position than before - a strange concept when it was bush that started this by wanting strategic bases around the area and decided trying to pesuade Ukraine to join NATO was the only way to achieve this...look where it is now - Russia holding a trump card in control of most of the black sea and America flappin. This is why the west is so pushed to blame Russia as a unprovoked invading Army but this is not the real reason; they have to invade to protect their status in the world and we wouldn't be in this mess if it wasn't for Americas mlitary power greed and the reaction of Russia trying to politically protect its own interests.

WW3 will come from the middle east WHEN it comes all though this doesn't mean nukes as everyone perceives when you mention WW3 but still any war hit everybody to some extent be it rations of inland attacks we will all feel it.

Now when you know the world of politics it takes the downing of that plane to another level - it was too big a coincidence when it was downed and this time with all the info Russia doesn't seem to be the one with the biggest motive here - the West are and Ukraine itself, it may have been a tragic accident tbh but that plane was diverted into a no fly zone and Russia didn't have the power to do that, all the other previous flight took a safer route.

But Politicians don't think of the obvious outcome....History tells us a lot!

As much as I agree with you, but the Cuban missile crisis was worse than this and diplomacy ruled during that fiasco, I have never been so sheet scared in all my life during that period, I was about 17 just beginning my sojourn in life, thank God that common sense ruled, Kennedy and Khrushchev went head to head both backed down in the end. A true story made int a movie "13 days" watch it, it's a good movie as well as being factual.

I disagree that the plane was diverted into a no fly zone. Assurances had been given that no aircraft would be fired upon if it were above a certain elevation, MH17 was well above the elevation specified. Other airlines were flying exactly the same route, it appears to me that whoever gave the order to bring it down wanted to test the resolve of the west.
