got a call from a customers mother could i call as the gas board electrician had condemend the electrics!
gas spark had left a cert stating defects after a quick check i agreed with his findings.
after speaking to the lady of the house it turns out she had an alarm fit beginning of the year2012 ,alarm engineer/ sparky
said your fuseboards is "DANGEROUS" i can change it if you want £200

so fuseboard changed

GAS NOT BONDED

could go on but im bored as no amount of ranting is ever gonna rid our once great trade of these ,i won't use the word "cowboys" as the real name is "CROOKS"

Had a similar situation with a friend of the wife.
She had a new cooker and the fitter (rightly) refused to connect as there was no earth path.

When I checked the CU I found that a cowboy had previously told her that she needed a replacement as the old one was no longer allowed under the new regulations. He kindly did the replacement and forgot to connect the cooker earthwire. She has been using an unearthed cooker for 2 years.

oh aye?...and what regs are them then...that say she`s got to have a new c/u?

One of the office girls at work has a BG "homesafe" type cover and called them to look at an alarm problem which they couldn't fix but did tell her she needed a new CU as it did not comply with current regs.
I had a look and everything was up to 16th regs so OK, and a new battery sorted the alarm!

You can't even rely on the "reputable" firms to know their stuff these days.

Had a huge row with British Gas a couple of years ago. My missus had her annual inspection on her boiler and the "engineer" condemned it as it had a 15mm gas supply pipe, not a 22mm as the current regs require.

It was fitted 5 years ago and had passed the annual BG inspection every year since!

Basically he was the sort of prat who'd condemn a 16th edition consumer unit because it's "out of date"...

Easiest thing to do is speak to the neighbours who recommended him, ask for his number as you want a new alarm panel and extra zones, when he comes a knocking; be there to greet him.

The question i would ask is who is the bigger charlatan? The dude who turns up in the saloon car,no "club" affiliation,amateurish attempt at a job finished,sloping off into the fog cash in hand. OR blue-chip national purveyor of flammable wind,liveried up riding on the crest of a multi-million pound advertising thrust,name and van on every high street whose business mantra seems to have come Mr.Fiddler in "carry-on camping". There are VERY competant and incompetant persons in both of the above groups but i know who is the more sinister adversary.....That'll be a pound...
