Jib grading

HI there, I know most people have heard this question so many times before but I’ve searched and there are so many different answers to this question.

I want to know what Grading I will be given once I have finished my 2356 NVQ Level 3

I put myself through college and wasn’t under a apprentice scheme,

I have a -Trainee JIB card
- ECS Card
-2330 Level 2 & 3
- 2382 17th Edition

I have always worked in the trade while at college and just wondered if I had to do the am2 or is the NVQ enough.
I’m confident I would pass the am2 but hoped I wouldn’t need it and could spend the £800 on the 2391 instead.

You can have what qualifications you like, but you need the practical to go with it. There could be people out there with the biggest most complex brain in the world, but who knows they might not be able to bend and set conduit, make off micc cable ends, make off swa ends. Ive worked with an hnc bloke and he was basically an Engineer but a panel builder, he struggled on site.

I know IQ is an engineer, but he his also a JIB Approved/Technician Electrician and still gets his Tools out and bends and sets a bit of conduit now and then lol
So unless an Engineer as his qualities they won't get a ticket. Too Right as well

I served my time as electrician and worked on everything from domestic to heavy industrial, worked my way up and am now elec eng....still carry tools with me and am first in there with my avo....always respect those who have started from the bottom...i meet engineers all the time who came straight from university with all the whistles and bells of qualifications but when one of them told me he had calculated a 28mm earth cable thats when you know experience always wins!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's todays education system for you! There are different ways from getting from a to b. I have in the past been surprised by people with degrees who have shown fantastic (engineering) ability with little real world experience and conversely people who have "done it for 20 years" and I end up doing there stuff again because 20 years ago it was right but times change. I would say judge everyone by what they do, what they say and how they say, not because they have a piece of paper but most people deserve a chance doesn't matter where they came from or where they want to go as long as they want to try, but hey that's just my view.

I agree, but obviously the JIB has to set some standards or whats the point. I think the point is, vocational qualifications upto level three are standard for giving a good rate of craftsmen/technicians. Whereas if you have your degree you would maybe jump to the management/engineering roles which are still assessed by the JIB but with differing vocational and academic requirements. You would also maybe looking at alternative registration with the, lets say IET, with designatory letter, lets say MIET and CEng.

They are all worthwhile qualifications its just where you fit in.

Sorry last comment was a general observation not with regard to JIB, I get the practical bit for that.

Steve - Why an earth do you want a JIB ticket when your an Electrical Engineer with Electricians skills. Your well above a JIB Approved Electrician.

J.mawer - A piece of paper illustrates a level a person as achieved, whether it be on the theory side or practical side. I find the biggest critics and moaners are the ones who think they are entitled to something but do not meet the criteria. This is not a dig at you, but everybody knows the rules.

tonys my original question really because I didn't know the rules (OK I had a pretty good idea as I had read the website), I now know them (very clearly) and really am not trying to suggest they should be anything else! Thanks for your help. You were correct by the way I cann't bend a bit conduit and having tried a couple of times have the up most respect for those who can ! also don't have 2391 either so it was embarrassingly an academic question which I actually quite regret asking

while we are on the subject of JIB grading, ive been in the industry for ten years now, and i got my 2360 part 1 back in 2003, and im halfway through my 2330 level 3, after that i will take my nvq 3, and then i hope to get some sort of grading by the JIB, but as im working through angencies, can i get a grading as im not working for a JIB company?? any help much appreciated

He doesn't have his 2391 yet so would grade as Electrician you only become Approved Electrician once gaining 2391 and have worked as a graded electrician for at least two years

4) Must have demonstrated competence and obtained a suitable qualification (the City & Guilds 2391 is a suitable qualification)

there are alternatives to the 2391

I imagine 2391-10, 2391-20 or the 2400 would carry similar weights.

There is no requirement to update as the testing procedures by and large are unchanged and the changes in parameters etc. should be addressed in a 2382 17th edition course/exam.
