Hi I am planning on having some work done in my garden area and garage and have been quoted a couple of prices from qualified electricians (self-employed to big companies) that vary in price, so just wondering if some of you could quote me, thanks.

I'm paying for labour, materials etc

Materials came to about £260/£300 roughly

garage:

new fuse board with existing lights and sockets going into it.

garden:

2 brick lights on 2nd step of garden steps
3 weatherproof double sockets
1 way switch and switch for my spur to control brick lights and sockets
being run in swa

Well in all honesty they sound like good prices! Materials coming in at 260-300 as you said means that a 450 total is allowing 150-190 for labour... That's cheap IMO

ok so bearing in mind what i have told you about the figures as 450 is a cheap quote what would you have remcommended for labour for the 1 day poss a bit more

its impossible to quote off the internet, if you have given everyone the same spec, just go down the middle for the quotes, cheapest ones probably a ----er.

So if you were consistently cheaper than me....... You'd be a) happy to not get the work and b) be labelled a ----er?

Cheapness isnt a reflection on quality if the quotes are between large companies and a sole trader

if you have priced the materials needed ,you could supply and get someone to fit .but the labour charge would normally be more ,because the electrician isnt making money on the materials .and if you buy the materials and there wrong it wastes everybodys time .

no not at all i am happy to pay whatever it costs but i was just wondering what the job is worth

You seem to be quibbling about the cost of everything, I don’t think you will be happy to pay the going rate. To be honest I think the lads are being foolish commenting on prices.
You’re now (in another thread) wanting material costs.

I can see this ending with you trying to squeeze the job with “the guys on the electricians forum say”.

I'm glad I'm not one of the sparks who's quoted for this work.
Sounds to me like you'll be nothing but trouble. You obviously have no trust in any of the guys you've had in to quote, either that or you're a phoney i.e. you're a spark pricing for a job and you can't decide on what price to give.
Either way smell fishy to me. I agree with Tony, you guys shouldn't be entertaining this fellow.

Think of it this way - you say parts are about £300 - if you do it LABC fees are between £120 and £250 if you do it - so your not saving at all doing it yourself!

Or why not ring a few companies and simply ask what their day rate is. I would disclose day rates to people asking, and they would vary dependant on your location and if the job required a electrician, an approved elec, technician etc etc

If the OP is trying to decide which contractor to use, why not ask for reference from previous customers - give them a ring and I'm sure that would help you make your mind up.It's impossible to give an idea of cost without specific info, anything else is just a stab in the dark. As has been said, prices will vary between Sole Traders and big companies due to many reasons, overheads etc.
