Been asked to take over job from another firm of electricians that left the job because of non payment about 3 years ago (gulp!)
Big extension lots of expensive kit. Been checking there work and mostly OK but then i find in one area, no grommets on metal boxes, cord grips left off down lights along with no earth sleeving and no brown and blue sleeving on fan and isolation switch.
I just don't understand why someone would not do these things, how long does it take to put a grommet in? Tell you one thing it takes a lot longer to put a grommet in after its all been connected!

Maybe it was the apprentice or maybe as they were struggling to get paid they couldn't care.

Anyone else had to take over someone else's work?

I've been asked to finish other peoples jobs off but when I've gone to look at what they done so far, its useually a right mess. Same as your situation, no sleeving, no cromits etc. I just said no but at that time I had a bit of work on so wasn't too bothered. I once had to finish a job in a factory. They were having an office/canteen refurb and the maintenance sparks started but couldn't finish it (too busy, not lazy) lol. There were cables all over that weren't labled, so it took longer to find all the right circuits etc.

I assume you've been given assurances that you will be paid ?

Personally i never take over a job if i know theres been issues about payment , dont see the point of risking it.

been on a couple of jobs after our eastern european friends had been on them, diabolical. Left the customer to it both times.
Pay peanuts, get monkeys.

Yep been there but as I said I have no doubt a minority want to do a good job but from what i can see it is a quick buck because we aint going to be here next year mind fairs fair to the Schemies they like to hand out Scheme membership because they dont descriminate (aye right)

HEY TC

yeh we have taken on half finished sites etc when companys gone bust in the past! you have to approach it as though they were doing the job correctly before the company went under.
upon checking the works done most didnt do a bad job.

Very much like agency work, lost count the amount of jobs I've never seen through 100%. Normally to cover someone doing a sickie, spend time looking at the job and how they've done it and work from there.

Get glazed looks when asking basic questions of how they want the cables run etc as every employer has different methods. The lad who's normally working has most of the materials in the back of his fan then it's a case of running round getting more cable etc, spend more time chasing stuff up than working then get moaned at for not completing the job or getting enough done.

Only once have I had another spark turn up the day before to run through a few things before they start back tomorrow, I've turned up a couple of times the day after to let them know what's been done but as most agency jobs are 30 miles down the road I'm not paying for that.

It's surprising the amount of different methods some people employ, the vast majority are within the regs and best practice but I have some downright shoddy and dubious work and that's coming from me, a Electrical Trainee...

So the last sparky walked off 3 years ago because he didn't get paid? What in the hell has happened in those 3 years? How do you know it was over payment? Did the client tell you? Sounds dodgy to me, I wouldna go near it.

I used to work in America and they seem to have a better system of payment. On Winning the contract the contractor is given one third of the cost of the job with another third on completion of half the contract then the remaining third is paid when the job is completed to the customers satisfaction.

I know the builder, he was owed a lot of money and the householder has been paying him back in installments over the last 6 months so he is starting to work for him again.
