My mate says his mr16 50w halogen lamps are constantly blowing. Said he buys them from home bargains which I reckon it's probably the issue. Have suggested replacing them with some mr16 led lamps to see how it goes. Thing is will these pull enough on the transformer to work? Not sure what transformer and how it's wired just yet.

Anything else to suggest? Or is led replacements the first natural step to take?

Thanks

I would suggest trying some lamps from a proper wholesalers if it was me. :)

buy chap , buy twice. or could be holder contacts in poor condition. better to replace holders for GU10s and bung in some 240V LEDs.

LED lamps do not generally work well on an ac supply, they will work but will have a shorter life.
Depending on the transformer there may also not be enough load to get the transformer to operate.
If you wanted to use LED MR16 effectively then you would need an LED driver.

Thanks - that's what I was thinking: if it's a single transformer per light then it probably won't have the pull with an LED replacement?

So, try some decent lamps instead of the home bargain carp, and if still no suggest replacement to GU10s as per Tel's post? Like I say, haven't even had a look for him yet but what's the chances of having enough slack on the cables to work through the holes to save lifting boards etc?

Could go either way to be honest.

Fingers crossed the previous installer was not stingy on the slack i guess.

Fair comment both - I've an inkling the lights were installed when the house was built, which would have me guess it was done before the floorboards went down, which would lead me to believe it'll be a nice tidy job with the cables clipped and no slack.

But here's hoping eh? :innocent:

I have put a load of cheap Ikea LED's in place of MR16's with standard transformers as a bit of a test, they have been there about 18 months now with no issues, no doubt they may not last as long but in the scheme of things a quick and cheap option and 1/10th of th power consumption.

I have also converted a load of MR16's to GU10's and used the LAP LED's from Electricfix, again have had no issues with the results, if you have a bit of slack this would be the best option. The GU10 are more resilient than the MR16's, I had put three or four transformers in a rental property and the lights kept blowing, changed to a GU10 and had not a single issue since. Got a big box of MR16's if he wants to pay the postage!
