Hello

I'm currently installing in a large house and the supply cable to the MCCB panel board is leaking a black bitumen type substance were the cable is terminated underneath. has anybody come across this before and is this a reason to be concerned?

Lecky board should cut back and change the end for you,the one I had like that had a green metal end box on it which isnt permitted either these days ,so they had to do a bit of digging outside and a power outage for a couple of hours.....The Ze altered too as they stuk an earth spike in at their joint outside and also changed it from tns (sheath earth) to tncs..no charge also

Why would the DNO get involved with the supply in to a panel board? Their jurisdiction ends at their cutout.

Presumably it's being fed by a PILC submain? The bitumen is poured in to the termination to seal the end of the cable. The fact it is melting is a sign of overheating of the cable or terminations and will need investigating.
Though it would help massively if you posted a picture of it to know exactly what's going on.

Hi and thanks for the responses guys. The cable is from a 160a bill switch, its a sub main to a panel board in another part of the house (very big house). Its a 4c 50/70 mm cable possible lead shealth not a swa. ive been asked to connect an extra supply from this panel board but with this in mind I'm now very hesitant to do so.

No the best picture and it needs rotating 90 degrees clockwise.

Is that bitumen or cable compound? Looks more like the latter to me, although can't see much. Where's it coming from, the flange or the wiped joint? Either way it might be fixable. If this is the bottom end of a rising cable there might be some hydraulic pressure on it, and it will find any pinholes eventually. More info / better pics needed.

BTW yes it's a lead sheath, it's got a wiped joint as far as I can see in the fuzzy pic.

Clearly it's leaking something, is this a cause for concern though it won't be down to me to remedy but I would want to add extra load to a faulty joint/cable etc

As Lucien says, what is it? Black bitumen which will have set pretty hard on the floor or the oil from the insulation which will be a less solid colour and more greasy in texture?
