  1. Hi;
    I am in the process of changing careers and am working through the qualifications required to enable me to become self employed. I have passed the Part P assesment and am shortly attending the 17th Edition,2392 and the 2391 course. Is it worth me enrolling in College in September to attend the level 2 2330 which will be a full time course for a year and then the level 3 course or is it best to work with an Electrician friend in August for a few months to get the hands on tools experience (May be this will be better than attending college?). I am just looking to get as much experience and the relevent quals to set me up for the future.

    Any advice gladly taken.

nothing beats hands on practical experience. could you not work with your electrician friend and do the college evenings, or one day a week?

Hi;

Do you think if i pass the courses mentioned below that would be enough to set up on my own or would you advice me to attend the colleges courses as well to get more experience?

Hi Nev and welcome. In most peoples eyes your doing this the wrong way round. The 2330 level 2 teaches the basics of electrical installation, health & safety, theory and circuits. I'm not saying that you will be unable to pass the 2391 but it will be made harder by not knowing the things you learn in the level 2 & 3. By all means do the 17th now but ask yourself if you are ready to take on and understand the complex 2391 without any experience?

Hi;

I was hoping that the courses i will be attending before my 2391 exam would help me in passing.

Will these help?

Principles in Electro technology
17th edition
2392 course and assesment
2391 week course and a day practical pre assesment before the exams.

I was hoping these would help me in the domestic side of life before committing to the level 2 & 3 of the 2330. If i do pass the above exams i am hoping to start up self employed to give me some income prior to starting college

:confused:

I do not understand how people with no industry experience can put themselves in for 2391, I am sure there are some prerequisites before enrolling on 2391, suppose it depends on your college.

I have gone through the same as you but by doing the 2330 first, I would not recommend doing the 2391 at this stage, I have not done it yet and I would recommend 12-24 months experience before attempting the 2391, it has a very low pass rate even for experienced sparks. The 2392 is a more realistic goal it concentrates on mostly single phase testing and inspection where as the 2391 incorporates three phase but even for the 2392 I would wait until you have done a few months on your 2330. Most colleges or training centres have several dates throughout the year to do the 2392 so you can pick your time to do it.
With regards to setting up on your own you will need the 2330, 2382 and 2392 to register with a Part P scheme like ELECSA, NAPIT.

There isn't a prerequisite for the 2391 (which I don't agree with btw).

The 2330 level 2 is the underpinning knowledge of electrotechanical installations and where most people start from that's why I said that most people will think your doing this the wrong way around. It's one thing having the quals that your going for but you've jumped a large part of what you need to learn. I suppose it is possible to do the route your doing but to be self-employed out in the field I can guarantee that you will struggle without hands on experience or college (l2) education.

If I asked you to explain:- the steel conduit being used as the cpc? Or how to wire up a c/u? Describe a safe zone? Look at a wiring diagram and understand what it means? If you can do these plus another thousand of these type of questions from the top of your head whilst on site, then you don't need the 2330 level 2.

I'm not having a go at you in any way what so ever and I'm happy to help but what you have learnt so far and what you are going for doesn't give you the full picture of what you need before going self-employed.

I'm a student thats doing it the wrong way round purely because of bad information or a guilable sales pitch that I enrolled on a distance learning course. Im actually doing my 2392 this week. I realised a number of months ago I would be no where near ready to set up or go it alone in the industry. I'm in the process of enrolling at a proper college to do the new CG2357 in sept. This is completely the correct decision, not only will electricians notice the qualifications, it would then give me the underpinning knowledge to be a good Electrician. Plus I recieved my 2391 course work this week, that alone is gonna take me 12 months. There is no way on this planet that the 2391 could been done in a week.
