i have disconnected and rewired everything and tried everything this is my own house that has this problem and have isolated all circuits to try and pinpoint the fault

Did you rewire as a result of this and then have the same problem, or is this something which has shown up on the testing after the rewire?

Either way why have you made a brand new circuit live when it has failed the dead testing?

i'm confused. in the OP you said the lights worked. now you say you've not yet energised them. how then, do you know that they work?

Hmmm one of the most knowledgeable and helpful guys on this forum has just been told to "do one" despite his other perfectly valid question still remaining unanswered.
As they say on a well known TV programme, I'm out.

how can I have no continuity in my live wire in my lighting circuit yet my lights still work

You obviously think you have a fault but insted of using basic test equipment and skills to localise it you've 'rewired everything'. You're obviously in over your head.

thanks for all your abuse guys I was actually very serious with this question have spent hours trying to sort out this problem tested R1+R2 at furthest point in circuit all the way back to first light in circuit still no continuity in circuit then using wander lead found I had continuity in cpc and neutral but open circuit in live including switching
Why would you require a wander lead to prove continuity of the neutral and the CPC?

its my own house of course I energised them then when testing found fault have not put them on since...
You're supposed to complete dead tests first then energise only if the circuit passes. I'm worried you're going to injure yourself or cause damage.
