I have a customer who wants their skylight to be lit up. The kitchen is being built at the moment so this is not retrospective. I have never fitted one of these at the moment so was hoping for a few ideas?

The customer doesn’t want the lights to be visible, just for the skylight to have a light shining up it when they want (I.e. switched).

From the bit of research I have done it seems that a lip has to be built on the bottom of the skylight for the strip light to be fitted. In addition the horizontal lip has to have a vertical lip on the side so that you can’t actually see the strip light itself. Also it looks like it may have to be in a metal channel or perhaps have a diffuser otherwise you can see all the little LED’s reflecting in the glass of the skylight?

Here is a link of something similar to what I am looking to achieve skylight lighting - Google Search - https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=skylight+lighting&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-gb&client=safari#imgrc=2Q16GxPLS4r6VM:

Could suggest to your customer to supply the skylight with built in electrics for you to supply the suitable switched supply, not leave it until the sky light has been supplied and fitted and ask you to retrospectively supply concealed lighting. just saying

Could you expand 9n what exactly the skilight is going to be/how it is going to be constructed?
Is it like a velux window which sits flush to the ceiling or will it be more like a 'tunnel' lined with plasterboard up to a window?

Thanks for the replies,
I'm away at the moment but will have a proper look at the links when I get back.

It will be a big opening 3m x 2m.
It will be a tunnel lined with plaster board which leads up to the window.

This company do a large range of LED strips and profiles:

There's also the forum sponsors as linked to above:

In which case I would suggest something like you describe in the OP, have the builders create a lip at ceiling level that you can mount LED extrusion onto. This could be an architrave fitted to the ceiling or just wooden strip fitted to the bottom of the tunnel.

You'll never completely get rid of the reflection in the glass if the light is pointing up, but a frosted diffuser might help a little.

I've done it on one recently and you can see the dots of the strip in the reflection next time I might try using the diffuser strip you can buy to clip it in but it still looks nice as it was.
Thanks for the first hand info Rob. I don’t suppose you took a picture did you?

I fitted LED strip around someone’s bedroom.
PowerLED from my local YESSS branch. Comes with an aluminium moulding that you stick the tape to, then a clear or frosted diffuser clips into the alu.
Different shaped mouldings were available, but you would need the joiner to build a frame around to hide it.

Nice picture!
Just thought of something else, where do you hide the LED driver for a skylight?
