Just had a call out for a lighting fault. Whilst looking for all the cables as every light and switch had 1 cable I found a junction box with all cables in. How often were houses wired like this as never come across it myself? Well the fault was the Xmas stuff had been dumped on the jb and smashed to pieces. Where could I find a similar box as it was fairly discreet and tidy. Cheers

Care to say why?

You mean why wouldn't I wouldn't wire every light and switch in a house to one huge junction box so theres only one cable everywhere? um well, I just wouldn't, I would always try to avoid joints of that size anywhere, just imagine having 8-10 neutrals rammed into one Block, and the same with feeds etc, and then 15 or so earths crammed into a block just to make it convenient to connect up a wall light with one cable, nothing wrong with normal wiring, never had a problem myself, I wince at the thought of a huge JB in a house, I would never consider it, JMO, do what you like on your Jobs, it's your call.

You use 2 jbs normally, and with wago's nothing is rammed into anything.
Wince all you want, but your reasoning makes you look naive.
I've never had a prob dining it like this if required or loop in or via the switch

I must have misunderstood you, it sounded like you meant all cables went into one JB and only twins at all lights and switches, nothing looped at all, so if I did understand apologies, if not then please explain again.

This form of lighting is used a lot around here. The old retired sparky liked to do his lights this way. Lack of certs and notices on CU's makes them interesting to find :(

Is it? well must be okay then if the norm in your area, wouldn't see it here, but we all learn from each other, have seen it in the olden days with JBs under floors, didn't realise the practice was still going on, thanks for the post fella.

we rewired a large house in poole dorset using the square plastic joint box enclosures--, at the back of a cupboard at eye level the cables we enclosed in 50x50 plastic trunk top to bottom
we didn,t use those cr-p springy wago junk things though

Sorry MDJ, I meant to say see it a lot on older installations in this area. Spark in question has now hung up his spurs.

I have to agree with you on this MDJ I wouldn't consider wiring like this. In fact to be honest I've never even considered it and never had a problem. What do you guys do then if you want to add a lighting point with only switch wires at the fittings? Lift the floors to access the jb's? Sorry lads have to say this is bad practice in my eyes and a poor way to get round a problem that doesn't really exist. But before sending abusive post back this is my opinion which I am entitled to.

Things change and so do practices some not for the better, a lot of the younger generation will do anything to make life easy not necessarily what is the best method of installation. If I was a customer with an ounce of knowledge and I was having my house rewired I would feel a tad short changed finding jb's dotted around everywhere.

Maybe I am , maybe I ain't. Maybe I haven't really thought about it and maybe I should just shut up. :hurray:

On the face of it though, it's just another perfectly reasonable way of achieving an end result. I certainly won't dismiss it out of hand 'cos I've never done it or seen it before. Might be ideal in some circumstances. Just 'cos it's not in the big green book doesn't make it wrong.
