Just had a call out for a lighting fault. Whilst looking for all the cables as every light and switch had 1 cable I found a junction box with all cables in. How often were houses wired like this as never come across it myself? Well the fault was the Xmas stuff had been dumped on the jb and smashed to pieces. Where could I find a similar box as it was fairly discreet and tidy. Cheers

it's not in the big green book doesn't make it wrong.

I'd never work to that standard, most of it is under standard IMO, anyhow Julian You do what you want fella, not saying it is wrong, Just not the way my generation would consider wiring a house, I have no problem with your views, Just don't expect me to jump around applauding this type of practise.

I came across a big junction box of cables lighting a large bungalow a while ago (all in new colours, so can't have been old), and it was a bloody nightmare. There were goodness knows how many cables going into it all completely unlabeled, daisy-chains of wago's to fit all the neutrals and earths in, and as it turned out after getting a tickle off it more than one circuit coming off the consumer unit. It took me hours to establish which cable did what before I could do anything useful, and looked like a junk box of jumbled wago's and multicoloured spaghetti. What an awful way of wiring!

By all means make a junction box for your six posh wall-lights, but only do it for that room!

Personally I think there's abit of over reacting here. Some people are moaning about having one main joint but there willing to have 3/4/5/6 smaller joints at switches or lights? Surely that's just as bad.?? JBs are very common round where I stay and they make fault finding very easy If there done right. Most common way I've seen/done is metal 4x4 /6x6 box then for every switch and light they get marked what switch/light they are and taped together. They then go through 20mm grommet and are the only pair to go through that hole. Dead easy :)

No I don't have any Joints Myself, unless you call a connection to a downlighter which is near it and easily got to when the downlighter removed from the ceiling and 100% accessible a Joint, The standards these days are just different from mine, end of, I am all for new methods, however a big JB with just 2 cores to every light and switches IMO totally ridiculous, if home automation is part of this then I can understand it, with home automation twins are run from the DB to individual rooms and they are switched via a server connected to a phone line, so they are individually controlled, but basic domestic wiring to a huge one off JB quite ridiculous and a sackable offence on some firms I'm sure, wheres my hard hat?? HAHA

mine haven't. in fact, i can honestly say, hand on heart, with being on this forum, has helped me to up my standards in some areas where my knowledge was lacking, as they say, no matter how long you've been in the trade, you never stop learning.
