When replacing light fittings and adding more on to an existing circuit, should any testing be done and certificates issued?

To be squeaky clean you should issue a MWC for like for like replacement, even if its just a light switch, but many people don't bother (myself included), the bloody paperwork takes 10 times longer than the job.

If you add extra to an existing circuit, or install a new circuit then an EIC and all that goes with it is a must, and you would tick "Addition" or "Alteration" or both as the case may be.

Cheers……………..Howard

If you alter and that includes an addition to an existing circuit a MNW cert is whats needed

I would install a lot of lighting, usually just replacing old fittings to more energy efficient T5s with electronic ballasts and daylight sensors. So say I was doing an IR test on the circuit, that would mean disconnecting the lights to perform the test, so as not to damage the electronics?

What if there is 100 lights for instance, would I have to disconnect all of them? This would be time consuming!

The Minor New Works certificate is intended to be used for additions and alterations to an installation that does not extend to the provision of a new circuit. Examples include the addition of socket outlets and lighting points to an existing circuit, the relocation of a light switch etc.

This certificate may also be used for the replacement of equipment such as accessories or Luminaires but not for the replacement of distribution boards or similar items. Appropriate inspection and testing should always be carried out irrespective of the extent of the work undertaken.

Hope that clears it up for you
