been working for this company(,not electrical) ,But have some warehouses thay needed rewiring and they know iam in training , so ask me to do the rewiring .I said i will do all the donkey work (eg putting trunking ,wires in place ,but not connecting it)but will ask a local sparky to finsh off.
Ok they said ,so rang a local sparky to check my work and do all the conection and testing ,i done the fixing right ,but when he ask for ÂŁ1500 too finsh the job they laugh and said there find someone else ,thay ask me to do it again ,NO then said theres no more work for me
oh well

i love testing and at the first opportunity i had i bought my own meter and took it to college with me at least i knew if the results were wrong it was not just spurious readings. although saying i like testing i could not bring myself to do pat testing too often unless i had a few cells removed. the first day i did it it drove me mad. nearly needed the number for the Samaritans :D

spurious readings

I knew someone else must use that term! :D

I completely agree with you there, can't stand PAT, did it for a week about 5 years ago and that was enough for me for life!

He should be looking along the lines of wrongful dismissal.

You need to be working somewhere for at least a year, before this is ever a possibility.
Most companies just get around it by putting people on contracts, and short ones at that. Then, when you are surplus to requirements they just don't bother to renew them.
Perfectly legal.

I wasn't sure whether he was a subcontractor or employee.

I was not disagreeing with you, merely pointing out that most employment protection only kicks in after you have been somewhere for at least a year.
Having employees on rolling contracts means the company can just not re-new those of people it does not want, even if they have been there for more than a year.
However, the law states that you can only do this for 4 years, then the person must be given a permanent contract anyway.

If the person was on a 'normal' permanent contact, and they wanted to get shot of him/her then they would need good grounds for doing so. This is where your suggestion of wrongful dismissal would come in.

I presume if he was a subbie, then they can just get rid of him whenever they please :(

Without doubt employment law does not offer enough protection to the employee. Having said that, if the poster is a Union member then he might wish to seek advice from them.
