London Rewire Pricing + Late Invoicing

Hi all,

I posted here some time ago asking for validation of a quote I received for a rewire. (10k assumed 60 points) And got some good advice so I'm back and could do with some help please.

The work has been done but ended up costing more than anticipated.

Additionally despite my request for a payment schedule to be provided throughout it has only been sent 4 months after the work was carried out. We paid as we went as requested by the contractor and despite repeated requests to be made aware of any large payments that were due, we've just been asked for a considerable sum.

West London 1970s 3 bedroom ex-council house 87 m2. Ground and first floors. Kitchen, living room, hallway, bathroom, bedrooms.

House was totally gutted following asbestos removal. The work included a complete rewire, new sockets, spot lights throughout, light switches, new consumer unit, wired alarms, ethernet cables, speaker cabling, charging point, outdoor lights and certification. We provided all second fix ourselves 160 points in the end.

Ended up about 20k. First off does that sound reasonable?

Second off, I'm extremely frustrated that despite repeated requests we were not made aware of the additional costs. Is it really reasonable to request a significant payment 4 months after the work was carried out? I'm feeling somewhat burned.

It sounds like quite a high end installation including data and music etc.
although it should be close to the original quote unless there have been significant changes or additions to the work originally quoted.

I think i would firstly invite the contractor round for a face to face chat to explain the invoice to you and why it is considerably more than expected.
keep it polite and stick with the details of the work, and the costs involved.

Truthfully being honest with myself I've answered my own question. We ended up going to town with the points etc vs original quote.

I guess I just want a sense check that it's not totally outrageous pricing for London even if I recognise its on the higher side.

I've just seen a quote for 4 bedroom 2 storey new build in Cornwall £30,000.

Maybe I'm still living in the 80s, but that seems pricey to me.

The Op said that his house had been gutted, so could be likened to a new build in respect of labour costs.
He's in London, where pricing is at a premium this one was in Cornwall where Labour is usually lower.

What he was really asking was if the £20,000 bill seemed overly excessive.
I gave him a comparison.

I'm assuming there was an original quotation and contract. For a project that size there jolly well should have been?
In all my contracts, additional work was only provided via a "variation of works" addendum. Changes to the original is never carried out until these were costed by the contractor and agreed by the client.
