Long cable rods

We might need to pull a cable through around 100m of fairly wide duct (around 10cm) and it might not have an existing draw rope. It has a 28mm water pipe and CAT-5 network cable in there, so one option might be to use the cable as a sacrificial means of pulling a rope and another cable through with the rest, but ideally a cable rod set/reel would be better that can go to around 110m.

Any suggestions for this, or a better way?

That is exactly what you need, the one I have is self propelling and has been very useful indeed over the years!

There's no way you'll be able to push cable rods 110 meters.... We managed to push some black class 10 Hdpe water pipe that came on a roll over 100meters but we had to unroll it nice and straight and leave it in the blazing sun to get the curves out of it before it worked.
I'd just use the CAT5e cable as a drawrope and pull a new one through with your new cable and rejoin it using your favourite IP66 joint system.

Ideally there should be inspection chambers at I think a maximum of 50m apart, I have done 80m with mine down 150mm smooth duct before where no draw tape was installed.
Other method is plastic bag with string attached, then Hoover/ garden vac to suck it through. Of course only works if the duct isn't swamped!

100 meters is quite along length without any inspection/boxes in between. You could try big Rods as for the cut and draw on the cat5 make sure you have good movement and it easy to pull because if you hit a blockage and cant get it back you've lost it. Good luck

Thanks for the ideas. Sacrificing the network cable is probably cheaper than getting long enough rods, etc, so that will likely be my first attempt. Ironically it is to put in more networking (but this time fibre optics)!

Use the cat5 to pull in a rope first…. Then use the rope to pull in the cable + replacement cat5

You don’t want the cat5 snapping trying to pull in a much heavier cable.

Never used a cobra on anything over 50m, but they push that distance effortlessly and 100m doesn't seem beyond reason.

Ah, didn't think you could hire that. I did find the company who makes them but have not asked the price (yet) but given how infrequently I need this, hire makes a lot more sense if the existing cable proves a failure.
