hi all.
just signed up here and have just posted in teh newbie section.

i currently work in construction but have just had to have spinal surgery to correct a ruptured disc.
i need to consider a career change a put my health first.
i have always been intrested im electrics and this is the route i would like to take.

im 24 so everything will be self funded. i also have no experiance so i would need to start at the very begining.
would this be level2 advertised at my local college (leamington spa college)?

i understand its not cheap so want to make sure im taking up the best options and gettign the best for my money.

the plan is to do l2 as a eveing cousre, 2 nights a week and then l3 with a placement getting on site experiance maybe 2days max a week. in my current job i earn good money and could not go back to a apprentice ÂŁ200 wage a week and still be able to bills and rent but can not stay in my job as i could be wheel chair bound by the time i get to 40.

any advise or direction would be great.
thanks.
ian

Yes, electrics isn't quite the walk in the park that other trades assume it is - sometimes you have to pull large cables, crawl around in tight spaces, bend steel pipes etc.

thanks for the replys.

i understand it is no office job and there is hard labour involved but when i compare it to my current duties, hauling 30kg of blocks at a time up stairs and ladders, lifting large heavy RSJ's into place, it seems a lot more labour friendy.

im im not looking for a career that will put nil pressure on my back i just want have slighlty easier life for my body.

but body conditon aside any advice on the training aspect please.
thanks
ian

DO NOT even consider sparking if you have a bad back. There are loads of us on this forum who have bad backs or eye sight because of sparking mate.

level 2 c&g 2330 is a good starting point. but to start off you wont get decent money as youre inexperienced in electrical.

when your back is better go to your doctor and ask if you can do manual jobs as a career

to be blunt mate, dont waste your money on trying to be a spark, just have a look around the site, you will struggle to get a start, thats without adding the bad back into the mix, sparking at any level involves lifting and carrying crawling around, chasing walls etc,id look for an office job, maybe electrical design or building design if your looking to go back to school

ok lets pretend im all healthy and had not mentioned any back trouble.

any advise on training??

personally id do some electrical courses and a cad design course and combine the two for a new career, pretending your back isnt bad tho it is your spark career will be over mid 30's

If you like the idea of electrics, try a HNC course in electrical engineering. if you can get on with a large firm, u could be on a maintenance team. this should put less exertion on your back.from the HNC you can do a foundation degree like i'm doin. from there you can top it up to a full degree, which hopefully opens more doors
