As for the DI thing, I refuse to acknowledge it. I now mainly do domestic all the time (one man), but have worked commercial and industrial in the past. There are some really good sparks about (and I'm including people that have only ever done domestic) and there are some others that call themselves electricians who simply aren't. No such thing as a DI, just a title that's put in place to try and dumb down the important work a domestic electrician carries out.
Glad I got that off my chest

"market forces"are the key and whining about what could be is howling at the moon...i could never understand the lads that wittered about solidarity and then bored their mates for hours in the pub about how much more their house was now worth...Family ALWAYS comes first. You do what you deem necessary, then you live with it. To the lad with the ample savings, good work but read Animal Farm...

I work with a few American Sparks and the unions over the pond seem to have it right. you subscribe and pay a set fee per month and then if your unemployed you get money off them plus your state benefits, so nobody has to take shoddy hourly rates because the union looks after them.

I spoke with an Australian spark and an Amercian spark who were over here for the BESNA dispute and they have the right systems in place for sparks.

We are now paying the price for all the sparks that jumped on the 714 and SC60 route in times past - sure they were makig good money then but they have led the way for companies to prefer self employment.
Many older sparks that I know that jumped about SC60 and CIS are all saying you are better off through the books now(and they are right)

You can get a job on a nice easy job on a production line for ÂŁ8 an hour and do not have to supply a raft of tickets etc just to earn a living.

Also as well I am working for a Yank firm at the minute and if the lads get laid off they can claim unemployment for upto the next 18 months, its more than just normal benefits, another helpfull thing. Sparks would just laugh at the agencies trying to get away with ridiculous rates.

Yeah, I put my feet up when I can't find a decent wage. Although I'd like to make a point - Never been on the dole in my life, quite happy to sink into my savings ha!

I have done the same thing in the past,as some jobs the wages are bad and when you work out what you will clear against petrol etc against sitting in the house and getting dole it is many times simply not worth it to work.

The Yanks would not suffer agencies like we have to,they would have all the sparks in the State out the door if a company tried that.

You have to be honest a strong union works.

I have no feelings for sparks in this country as they bend over and take it and never do anything about it,and moaning about the union, there is nothing stopping them joining the union and going to the meetings and doing something about it.

so you couldnt answer my question then ?

and i wont give it a rest when good sparks are labelled "scum" just for taking whatever work they can.
so keep your halfwit opinions to yourself.

Biff, you need to cut this. Have a look on facebook for sparks against de-skilling and JIB jobs, lets get the rates up for the timeserved lads !!

I don't think anyone is saying that ÂŁ8 ph is good enough mate, I think the point Biff's making is the same as mine. Sometimes you have to do things that are distasteful to keep your kids fed and/or a roof over your head.

personally i refuse point blank to work for less than ÂŁ13-14 per hour and ÂŁ8 per hour doesnt buy the sort of work i can do.
but im not going to slag anyone else off for making a different decision.
and thats the last comment i'm making.
