Hi all,

Next Tuesday 1-3pm at BRE Watford the MCS technical steering group will be meeting to discuss the implications and potential changes to the guidance stemming from BRE's solar PV fire risk report.

The last meeting didn't have any actual working solar pv installers attending*.

Without actual working installers on the technical working group we could end up with some unworkable / counter productive / time wasting regulations being forced on the industry, as well as issues that we're aware of but the BRE report may not be sure about not being tackled.

I've been a few times, but it's extremely frustrating when those who actually know what they're talking about technically are outnumbered / talked out / out voted by those without that direct hands on experience.

So this is an appeal for any of the regulars on here who know their stuff to down tools for a day and join me at BRE in Watford so we can combine to bring some much needed hands on technical knowledge back into the solar pv technical steering group.

There is momentum building from the BRE fire report that I think is likely to lead to a revision in the guidance, so it's pretty vital that from this meeting forward there is a significant level of current hands on technical expertise from the solar installation side of the industry represented at this meeting and subsequent meetings to ensure that any updates are workable / don't cause more problems than they solve etc.

If there are revisions to be made for the fire resistance side of things, then this will also be our once in a blue moon chance to make any other revisions to the guidance that we think should be made at the same time.

I'll be driving down to Watford from Leeds and happy to give anyone a lift from Leeds or anyway roughly between Leeds - Watford.

If anyone is up for this mission, please pm me your contact details / email address, full name, company name, MCS registration number and length of time you've been MCS registered for.

I'll put a list together and send it over to ensure everyone is ok to be on the invite list, and once approved can then forward you agendas and briefing documents etc.

call out in particular to @Worcester , @SolarCity , @SibertSolar , @whinmoor , @The Solar King, @Energetic but hopefully there are still others who use these boards who're still in the industry that I've missed out - give me a shout please. Thanks.

*though there were some who have significant previous solar installation experience, they're no longer active installers themselves.

I would be up for it but we've just had a baby son. The birth wasn't straightforward and my wife has an operation to repair the damage on 13/09.

That, of course, means I could theoretically attend this meeting. I'll let you know before weekend.

Don't even know if there's any tumble weed left :)

We're still active, and generally the problems we find are on installations of companies that are no longer trading. (Though had an example of a poor installation by Caplor energy this morning)
Next Tuesday is possible atm. I'll need to read the BRE report first.

I've emailed you the details

Great thank Worcester.

Whinmoor thanks, I'll wait for confirmation, hope all's ok. If you want to send me your details anyway I can at least get the ok for the invite, may be a bit late by Friday as I think there's a NDA to be signed etc.

Well this is helpful ..!!!£"$% "£%£ $¬¬!!

Dear Gordon,

The Chair of the Solar PV Working Group is currently on annual leave and is therefore is unable to review your request in time of the next Solar PV meeting on the 12th of September.

Once the Chair has returned he will be able to consider your request and we will keep you updated with any information.

Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.

Kind Regards,

Lorna Clarke

Only just read this post as I've been away in Minehead all week.

I wouldn't be able to make Tuesday as it's the last day on a shopfit we've been working on. Have to be there unfortunately.

I've emailed to ask them to fast track the applications, pointing out that for the last 2 meetings the only MCS certified solar pv installers in attendance were Solar Century, and they basically sub contract any microgeneration / sub 50kWp solar PV installations.

Referenced the regulatory failings that led to grenfell fire, hopefully they'll take the point and sort it out.

There is still technical expertise in the group, but it does need active installer input as well to get a proper balanced view on installation issues.
