Anyone else had problems with these.... Megaman 11w low energy GU10 ?

Recently fitted a kitchen with 6 of these as specified by customer, and 2 have given up already after a couple of months ??

Makes me look a bit stupid as I was saying they should last a good year, suppose I should have know better buying 'wilts plus' stuff... not again.

So now comes the job of changing them all. What do you chaps recommend instead ? Maybe an LED is the best bet, but bit more pricey ?

Many thanks,

Sy

See message below sent to Denmans Head Office

Dear Sir/Madam

I would like to bring to your attention my serious concerns about the performance of your Megaman/JCC GU10 CFL downlight luminaires.

Over the course of 2009-2010, we purchased 67 of these units from Denmans (Loughborough Branch) at a total cost of approximately ÂŁ1300 as part of our building project fit-out. Recently, we received a Home Energy Monitor from our energy supplier (NPower), which I am using to assess various loads around the building. Upon measuring our lighting circuit loads, I was shocked to discover that these units are consuming 25-35W each, rather than the stated power rating of 11W.

Furthermore, we have experienced an excessive failure rate of these units, around 15 having failed over the past 6 months after usage far below the stated lifetime of 10,000 hours. Although approx 30% of the units are dimmerable, which account for the majority of failures, non-dimmerable units are also failing, despite low duty levels. Furthermore, despite the stated 18 month guarantee period for the Megaman GU10 CFLs, Denmans (Loughborough) have now stated that they will refuse to replace failing units from this point forward, and have referred us direct to Megaman, thereby contravening the Sales of Goods act 1995, which places the responsibility of replacement of faulty goods with the vendor of the equipment.

As you will understand, if my data is correct, remedial action needs to be taken ASAP, not only for my own sake, but for that of the industry as a whole. Given my professional role within the industry, I am concerned regarding the impact of such apparent mis-selling on our efforts towards carbon emission reduction, both from an energy in-use perspective as well as the embodied energy wasted in failed units.

Prior to taking this matter further via legal and other channels once my measured data is validated on site by more accurate means than a home energy monitor, I would like your views on the matter.

Finally I must say that I appreciate the measures taken by NPower, who should be congratulated for providing me with an Energy Monitor free of charge, without which my concerns may never have come to light.

Regards,

thought the full title was " can't find light". i do some work on a residential home, cfl's in the passages. i have to use a torch to see what i'm doing. get more light from my zippo

I bought a bunch of these lately - finelite 9W, but on installing them I found the light quality (supposed to be 'warm white') to be really sub standard - a bit like the cheap bayonet CFLs lamps when they first came out years ago - a really weird, cold and dull kind of light. Does anyone know if they are all like this? are there any CFL GU10s that give off a light closer to a halogen, i.e. that more 'yellow' light? Phillips? Megaman? I really want something low energy and cool running, but directional and not too pricey - I find the LEDs are much too 'white', but are also a very dissipated light, I don't see the point of this in downlights, I'm after more of a spotlight. Cheers!

Got a little re-testing job on (rewire but the builders have been in and 'changed' things) in the afternoon, but that's it today. TBH I'm quite happy about it after the day I had yesterday. I officially hate cottages!

i've got to start some work on a local farm. it's a nightmare. was going to go test earthing but it's so bloody cold, won't be able to grip tools etc.
