i usually prize the lath with a large metal flathead and remove with a wood blade but its getting a bit time consuming scoring round the plaster, then chapping the outline with a flathead to remove the laster, and were only half way there

I would say it is more about the bits than the torque of the drill. I use high quality Fisch auger bits for drilling out mortices and peg holes...
