The mains relay's I have used are getting too hot, seems that the led resistor is of the wrong value so are dissipating too much heat.

Have started to do it another way for the mains monitoring.

Could you not clamp a big heat sink across the relays
 
Maybe too late now, but didn't one of the forum sponsors 'RF Solutions' have something 'off the shelf' that would do, rather than have to build one yourself?
Not for a total build of less than £100 :)

Got rid of mains relays and used 5v ones. Sorted out a little charging circuit and change over for the battery.
