Hi guys,

Anyone hold a NEBOSH certificate, and if so has it been beneficial career wise? I go to London to sit the course and take exam in April/May and will be doing the International course to open more doors elsewhere if necessary.

Just wondered if anyone else has this and how useful they have found it?

Ben

Hello Ben.

I have a NEBOSH certificate. It's benefits to the holder depend on circumstances. I'm a qualified sparks, but my career in a large manufacturing industry led to (an unintended!) diversification into the safety field. When it's properly structured and resourced, safety work is very interesting & rewarding and covers the whole spectrum of industrial activity. Electricians have an increased awareness of safety by the nature of their work, and this helps. Part of the up-side is that you are very often helping folks sort out a problem and can make a genuine contribution to project safety and progress.

The drift away from the core task of electrical work may be a disdvantage, with some critical skills getting rusty, and this has happened to me, although I do my best to remain closely in the picture.

NEBOSH is an extensive course, so be prepared to give it the time and committment it needs. It will certainly give the recipient a good grounding in all aspects of the management of safety that will influence the candidate's thinking for their whole career. The benefits are primarily achieved within a pro-active safety environment with everyone else on board. Being on your own on an unreceptive site can be a bit demoralising.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

Regards,

Colin Jenkins

Thanks Colin,

That was the exact answer i was after. I too am currently working within a large manufacturing company where by i carry out maintenance, machine repairs and commissioning as well as some basic health and safety walk arounds and PAT testing responsibilities etc. I sort of manage the core processes that enable the manufacture to take place.

I was primarily concerned about the transition between my current job and taking on the SHE stuff because i didnt want to get rusty in my bread and butter skills that have found me work to begin with. I don't know if i would enjoy a career that is just focused within the H&S sector, is this what you do now?

Having said that however i can see the rewarding advantages to knowing you defraying the potential of injury to those you work with and to working practices in general. That appeals to me, no matter how much i dislike some of the people i work along side haha!

I have a previous history in academics so i am prepared for the school work, shouldnt be a problem, i enjoy the chance to learn something new and continue to add strings to my bow. The more badges the better. Seem to be the deal in the boy scouts anyway.

Getting my work force to get on board and making the drastic changes that are undoubtedly essential to bring certain areas up to scratch, will be by far the most challending aspect of this entire journey.

Thanks for you reply.

I did see SHE managers and Health & Safety consultants and managers in salaries of upwards £60k and averaging at around the £45-50k marks. This is a fairly heavy incentive to me should a career in health and safety present itself.

I imagine my annual salary however will increase by about £7.89p before tax. £1.14 after it.

what was the job ? electrician ?

yes but with their own fleet of vehicles and they take to do with exterior and street lighting, hence other guys tickets would be appealing to interviewers....keeping vans going and trimming branches away from street lighting to get access etc.........had another interview as well with the "what can you bring to the company" and "name some examples of" questions.....just like all the big companies ask the same questions....won't be hearing back from that one as I sat and went "UMM"...."UMM"....and they looked at me like I just finished the last of the biscuits...

I had an interview with turners for an electricians role at HMS Gannet a few years back, the interview was in a portakabin in the middle of nowhere and they had the heating on full blast with 4 of them sitting on the opposite side of a table from me, they grilled me for an hour an a half asking me loads of them "example questions", it was a ridiculous interview, for them to turn around and give me feedback that i was too nervous. only interview ive ever had that i didnt want the job when ive left the room afterwards. found out later the job had already been given to someone internally and it was all a paperwork excercise, ridiculous really cos id taken a day of my current job and had to pay my own expenses to get there. some companies just arent worth the hassle.

That sucks. I made enquiries before applying for the job I'm in now (council) to make sure that there really was a job going, and they weren't just advertising to satisfy legislation.

I took a copy of the job description and person specification with me and when I had finished attempting to answer the 6 preset questions, I was given the opportunity to ask questions.

I didn't have anything to ask but I didn't feel as though the questions (and my answers) allowed me to show them how I was suitable for the job.

So, I went through the JD/ PS point by point and gave examples from my work and training history that showed how I did have the skill required.

I got the job.

had that a few times over the years, councils are quite bad for that, along with the fake adverts from agencies that go as far as "interviews" and the likes....

Grant37 it was up the back of beith...literally in the middle of nowhere, for an interview at prestwick, i think they deliberately made it difficult to get to so people wouldnt show as public transport couldnt have got you there

The NEBOSH National General Certificate is a qualification designed to help those with health and safety responsibilities (e.g. managers, supervisors and employee representatives) to discharge more effectively their organisational duties and functions.
I've heard positive results about "nebosh certifications". Good luck. :)

As a SAP (Senior Authorised Person), did my Nebosh last year. It's not difficult, once you get your health n safety head on. It's a general requirement for all our shift team leaders to be Nebosh qualified - Most got the job without the certificate though, and are being trained up. Did the day release course over 3 months as opposed to the 2 week intensive one. This gave you time to read up between weeks and digest what you were tought in class. It's basically death by powerpoint and the hardest part was staying awake all day. By 3pm we were all nodding off! Hopefully you'll get an intersting tutor.

About ten years ago I had an interview with Turners at their office in Govan for a job on an army base in Kosovo.
It was just with one man and he was nice enough and went through all the details and answered all my questions about time off and tax etc.
They even asked how far I had travelled and gave me 25 pence a mile for my travel costs.
The next week they phoned me up and offered me the job and were suprised when I declined and asked why? My response was the money was a disgrace and it might be tax free but I would want much more money to risk my life in a war zone.

I was speaking to somebody the other day and he was telling us that he had about 40 different tickets,...... he said "there's nothing you can tell me about tickets"..here's the ones I remember him telling us....

2391-10
2377-12
2377-11
2377-22
2377-32
2394
2395
Gas safe
17th Edition
NICEIC membership
PASMA
IPAF
COSHH
Asbestos
Confined Spaces
Work at height
NEBOSH manager certificate
CSCS managers card
ECS
Approved person
3 Day first Aid
Abrasive wheels

and there were a load more but I can't remember them as he was using the abbreviated names for them and I was trying to snaffle food while at the same time listening to him having a rant at a few guys that were going on about tickets whilst staying out of it myself but they were all health and safety related......cost his previous employer and himself thousands....

and he is now on........about £9.25 an hour...... :stuart:

I might be the same with the amount of different courses I did to try to get a job,but half of them will be out of date now and I am not renewing any that I have not used.

Well i did the International NEBOSH Cert, TechIosh level 3 one. Wasn't really hitting National law so much, more based around IOL guidelines. I enjoyed it, having done a degree in criminology and being quite accustom to slogging work out, i was surprised at the volume of content and the expectation of quantity during the exams. i wrote over 24 pages by hand across two exams during my course. Hand was like a little monkey paw when i finished.

The cert holds some gravitas in the industry though, and i am glad i did it for sure... although i dont get my results back till July, i am confident i passed.... but many jobs i have looked at specify it as an essential requirement. Think as far as some tickets go, it opens up more doors then some.

It is a bit of a dry course for sure like Jamzie says, beaten to death with a course book 2 inches thick whilst enduring slide after slide after slide of the same common-sensical crap, best bit about the whole course was the buffet at lunch and free coffee and biscuits. .. and the fit receptionist in the hotel.
