Going waaaaaaaay off topic here, and I know it shouldn't come as a surprise, but when I walk into Maplins, I don't expect to be greeted by toy helicopters, tanks, whirligigs, a myriad of phone paraphernalia and all the rest of it. Only after ploughing through and around this stuff do I find what I really want - the soldering irons, the components, bits and pieces of this and that, ANYTHING but those pre-prepared bits of junk that do nothing for the mind!
The soldering 'section' was limited to one drop (retail term learnt from wife), and the next most interesting part, from my point of view, the tools 'section' tucked away in the corner. I didn't see any books on basic electrical stuff that I'm interested in at the moment.
It strikes me that if you don't know the technicalities of the the you want/need, you are heavily reliant on the under-trained staff therein, or else come to forums like this one where you get the info that is of some real use.
As they say on the internet, 'Rant over'.
