ok so im 17 and was fresh out of college i managed to find myself working with a group of sparks.
my problem i cant really work upto there expectations even if its just cleaning up, im not really motivated that much but i really dont wanna loose this job.
i find it hard to be energetic in my work like sweeping fast instead of slow and my feet are nakered after every day im getting up at 6.oo to get to work for 8.oo and finish around 19.00 getting home for around 21.oo just to
sleep and get up again.
also the lads im working with dont stop for any kinds of breaks no lunch or outhers (apart from maybe a smoke every couple of hours).
any advice for ways to stay energetic and motivated please share

Hang In there Bud you Sound Just like me at the start of my apprentaship 4 years on an am now doing an engineering cause and now an apprentice engineer helping and working with some of the best project managers for southern electric contracting and i am only 20

goood luck mate and hold in there

Regarding breakfast, porrige can be good for slow release energy, but to stave off hunger (I tend not to stop for any lunch when working, and now your post has made me feel sorry for the little lads who've worked with me lol) you need protein. Bacon and eggs is great but obviously not good for you every day. I find 2 boiled eggs with a couple of soldiers keep me going from 6AM till 7PM. Protein, see. That's science, that is!

Mind you, if you're not constantly working you will naturally get hungry. That's why office chicks have to go to the gym.....

The work you're doing is boring as hell and at 17 that boredom is probably tripled! Just keep thinking 'when I'm 50 I'm going to have people working for me'. It's a long old road and you're right at the beginning of it, but if you stay positive, try and have a sense of humour about tings it will gradually get easier and easier, and suddenly you'll find yourself driving an Aston. Learn what you can from the guys you're working for, and always show willing.

And just think, you could be bored as hell making a little money, carrying stuff working on your muscles for the chicks, beginning a very rewarding career, and tell people at your school reunion in 10 years that you do something clever and important. Or you can be bored as hell, making precisely sod all, watching this morning and growing a fat arse, eventually to work in McDonalds and then maybe deal with arsey people all day in a call centre, and then in 10 years you don't even go to your school reunion because you have achieved nothing since you left.

thanks alot rocker this really really helped me with my situation, few points in the last couple weeks i been thinking of giving up not because i find it boring but because its physically tiring at the moment.

another problem of mine is that my best just might not be good enough or that's what im thinking anyway.
i mean ive been trying to work my arse off last few weeks and i kinda just still feel like im letting them down,
which puts me in a position where im woried about my position, but i dont think ill get fired i mean not taking anything for granted but i dont think any of them wanna clean up or walking around all day getting stuff for them.

You will feel like that for a while - this job takes a very long time to learn and whilst we all appreciate that, when we're on site we tend to forget that it took us ages to do things once.

You WILL get better. Your best may not be quite good enough now, that's what learning is all about. Otherwise, well, we'd all be able to do everything after being shown it once, wouldn't we? It don't work like that, just keep doing what you're doing, you will get better and faster and you will find it easier the more you do it. Once you've mastered that, you'll move onto somethig else you're rubbish at at first.

If you're 17 and you've just come out of college into manual work your body has had a hell of a shock. Fatigue is a natural reaction to this but in time you will get used to it, it's just a case of riding it out until then.

As well as having plenty of water take multivitamins, they boost your system too,im sure most of the sparks on here were taken for mugs as apprentices,u know go get me a sky hook etc etc,and were all still here so that shows u we didnt give up.

It all seems strange when you first start just handing tools chasing out trying to find bits youve never heard of never mind seen before you go out to the van to get a certain tool or drill and cant find it then worry what the spark is going to say when you go back .He gives you an apparently easy job to do and it seems to take ages and you still get it wrong you have to hang in there and slowly one day the light appears at the end of the tunnel and things start to click together . What you have to remember is that the guys you are with now had to start somewhere so they will know if you have it to make the grade.

nah not beeing taken for a mug really got no time for it.
altho i do remember when i was little and was in the scouts camping i was sent on things like that like go get the glass hammer, or the long stand (makes you stand there for a long time)

Knuckle down kid, weve all been there done that and got the T shirt. Show some interest in what they are doing and ask questions, sweep with a smile and get it done quick, then get back to getting in their way again and asking more questions. Once they grasp that you are interested and willing to graft it will get easier believe me. Treat them with respect no matter how they treat you and eventually that respect will be returned.
Keep smiling and rise above it all.

Im also a 17 year old apprentice and im weedy as hell. I understand where you coming from with how tiring the job is and fatigue. But 3 months on you get used to it and Im hardly feeling it anymore.

Thats until they get you pulling through 185mm armoured cable anyway! Doh!
