hi there

i currently have a 6 way wylex NN board which has a 63A BS4293 RCD main switch. The MCB's are BS3871 Type 2 and 3.

would any new circuit added to this board be non compliant ? and therefore fail a Elecsa or any competent person assessment?

basically does the board need to be changed before i can add new circuits ?

many thanks

If you're not a member yet and are thinking of using it for your assessment, I'd recommend calling Elecsa and running it past them.

They don't bite and I always find them helpful.

Ian the existing RCD main switch was done to a previous edition of the regs and the BS 3871 is fine as long as there are no obvious defects ie burn marks or switching tension, so if you just adding a circuit to the CU then fine it is not a problem.

As for the cert personally I would not put anything on it, not even under the section for existing installation, but if you wanted to mention it then there would be no problem.

As for the assessment, remember he as come there to pass you not fail you as your money to them. You can even make yourself a swot by saying that you know that the RCD is a BS 4293 and that it is an old model that as been replaced by BS 61008-1 but it tested ok, here are the trip times, and I wanted to save the customer money, also that the BS 3871 is also been replaced by the BS 60898 and you risked assessed it and there was no damage to it, in fact it as never been used so again I took the cost to the client into account blah blah blah.

Sometimes getting a not so perfect job on an assessment can work in your favour, as you can explain how you tackled it, why you did it using words like risk assessment and let them know you can think and can do work that is not always clear cut.

Told a long time ago bullsh1te always baffles brains !!!!
