New meter connection

ta-electrical

Hi, got a couple of questions for a job i'm doing;

The DNO have put in a supply in a meter cupboard outside the property waiting for an electrician to put the tails in before they connect the supply and put in the meter. At the moment there is no meter in the property.

I Will be using a hockey stick to feed the tails into the property and then up through 50mmx50mm pvc trunking into consumer unit,
is it okay to do it like that ?

Also after i have put the tails through can i call the DNO in immediately to fit the meter or Would i need to complete the whole rewire of the house first to call the DNO in ?

Thanks.

It is possible to have the connection made before the final circuits are installed.
However the DNO would more than likely want an EIC to cover whatever was installed at the time of connection.

Depends what area you are in our lot would put the meter in and affix a disclaimer notice and leave you to connect tails as the meters we fit now don't require sealing to change the consumer sides tails and they have an isolator.

The DNO don't fit the meter , the electricity supplier do. You or the punter have to deal with both. You can get a builder's supply fitted and then convert, but there is extra cost. If you have an EIC for what's there there it shouldn't be a problem and often they don't even ask for it, if it looks like you know what you are doing. Try to get a supplier that fits an isolator between the meter and CU, as this makes it a lot easier to go to the full installation, as you don't have to get them to pull the fuse. This usually happens when you don't use the local DNO as the electricity supplier too, in my (admittedly) limited experience. It enables the meter fitting company to absolve themselves of liability. When you talk to the office it's all very complicated, but on the ground its simpler, as long as you are competent and it shows. There is usually a limit to the length of the tails 2 metres or so, but you can go a bit longer if you show it's OK by the BRB. The paperwork with the meter box usually gives some clues. If you need much longer, I've been told that you can fit a switch fuse and then go to longer tails as long as they are the correct size.

I work for british gas on metering. If you use them as your supplier we fit a meter and install an isolator, so you dont even need your tails in the box. All we need is a live cut out supplied by the DNO

Same here in Yorkshire. As long as the cut-out has been installed we'll bang a meter and 100amp isolator in the cabinet. Up to you to then connect to the isolator.
