Was told by a fellow sparks today that the latest edition says metal clad distribution boards must be used in domestic installations is this true

Have you installed many magnesium dist boards then?
basic chemistry

If you stick a nail in a flame and get it glowing red hot, it will form an oxide coating, but it won't burn, because it conducts heat quickly away toward the part that's not in the flame. Particles aren't able to do that, so there is even the possibility of vaporizing the metal long enough for it to support a flame. Just like a log won't burn with a match or lighter held under it, but sawdust and wood shavings will burn easily.

If there going to be the fussy about it being a metal board surely then the terminal lables should be pressed into the metal as the labels can be combustible?? Ever set earth sleeve on fire?? Surely that's combustible?? It sounds like a load of **** to give Mr 2 week course electrician something to do!!

Not definite yet is it? anyway it's going to be "a not readily combustible material" I think

had the wylex rep in last week and they are convinced their interpretation of ammendment 3 is to have metal clad boards in all domestic properties, they have spent heavily on it so it so somebodies neck is on the line if thats wrong

Could be they have dropped a clanger, wonder how many of the other makers have preempted.

Or they are hoping it frightens the life out of the Electrical Trainee and they start fitting them anyway totally unaware as usual of what is actually required.

Maybe the case! Also said the london fire brigade have been pushing this since they have had a dramatic rise in consumer unit fires since 2008, i said that will be Electrical Trainee or torque screwdrivers not because a consumer unit is made from plastic!

I was under the impression there was such as thing as 'flame retardant plastic' - like the stuff they use to make break-glasses and the sheath of FP200. Could consumer units be made out of that instead?

and coincidentally, the electrium MCB recall concerned MCB supplied 2009-2010 that were a major fire risk.

Magnesium? That's boring, potassium is more interesting on that count.

But both are irrelevant to the point, however the flammability of aluminium and steel are more relevant to the point as they are used in electrical enclosures and both are flammable.

Melt downs yes, actual consumer unit fires, i bet they could count those on one hand!!

I suppose next, they will want MCB's, RCBO's, MCCB's, etc and just about every other electrical protective device's casing's to be metal!! lol!!
