So bit random but been to look at a new shop that has tanks with those fish that you stick your feet in, and they eat the dead skin off them.

The tanks require power and come with a short length of flex (approx 600mm) and plug top. In my opinion these tanks would be classed as a bath tub as a proportion of your body would be submerged.

What are others thoughts?

Install sockets greater than 3m away?

702 may be more appropriate than 701 though.
701 is locations containing a bath or shower (including bath tubs, showers and birthing pools)
702 is swimming pools and other basins (including swimming pools, fountains and paddling pools)

This application isn't a far cry from a paddling pool I shouldn't have thought.

But you could consider it to be more alike to a hottub installation, the advice for these is to use 702 if outdoors and 701 if indoors.
Sounds sensible to me!

Isn't the context and intention of the 701 regs about protecting the person who's at higher risk of death from shock due to being wet?

Yes, but I was more referring to the socket distance issue in the OP's dilemma. In 701 the intention is to place sockets far from zones to prevent appliances being used in wet areas by wet people. In this instance a dedicated socket not accessible for normal use may be appropriate for the appliance if installed correctly.

These are the offending articles anyway ......... what do we reckon ? (to the fish tanks I mean, eyes front lads)

I think the rule book uses the words bath and shower so would imagine this regardless of the fact you are semi submerged in a fish tank which is what it is, is not a bath or shower.

look at it this way, if you walked into a fish shop, lots of big tanks full of water and fish, you would call them fish tanks yes? Well I'm my opinion they are still fish tanks, now if you choose to pull a chair up and put your feet in it that's up to you.

if unsure, write on the certificAte that it's a fish shop and they are just fish tanks :)

If concerned, what about masterseal sockets, and 30mA or even 10mA rcds?

That's what I was thinking. The appliance shouldn't be plugged in or unplugged very often so master seal sockets should do the trick. That's worth thinking about 10mA RCDs. Not sure what the earth leakage would be per tank though so may have to limit a couple of tanks to a circuit.

While we are in the subject, does anyone fit 10mA RCDs in science labs?
