Hi has anybody got approved contractor with the nic? if so what was the assessment like as im a bit nervous . i have limited testing experience.?????

I am, was most of the day with a friendly guy who helped with lots of useful info. They don't expect you to know everything but the work you show must be safe and to the regs and you must demonstrate why you chose to do things a certain way. Pretty much all of the assessment was testing so I would suggest spending many hours running through testing everything you can find to make sure it's second nature when the day comes, that way your mind can be concentrating on what he's saying to you while you're on auto pilot. When's the big day?

Thanks for that ive not booked up yet as im at the very early stages of my testing only passed my 2392 last week so need to keep testing until like you say its 2nd nature.

i wondered if they know that i have 13 years experience and am competent but still on the early stage of testing would they fail me? or guide me ?

All the inspectors I have dealt with have been friendly and helpful. Remember it’s not in their interest to fail you unless you are a
totally incompetent cretin, they want you on their scheme as you are helping to pay them. I spoke at length at my last inspection and asked about Approved Contractor verses Domestic Installer, what he said was; If you are saying you do Commercial installation along with Commercial PIR’s they would expect to see evidence of that and therefore test you on that sort of work. With your experience you should be fine. They do not try to trick you or humiliate you. Good luck.

To be honest i only want aproved so that i can do domestic p i r "s !!
Afew people have stated its the cheaper way as eposed to doing the domestic ,then the pir add on ??

There is no requirement to be part p or an approved contractor to carry out domestic pir's.

You only need to be competent!!

Once you have completed any pir's you then may need to be part p to carry out any repairs.

yes but to give a cert for councils you do ?
not sure how many certs i will need to do to be classed as competant?

You don't need any certs to be classed as competant. The only time you are going to need to prove your competance is when something goes wrong, someone gets injured/ killed and you are up in front of the judge. Some people like to think they are competant and that a day in court will never come, while others (such as everyone on here I expect) choose to take training, serve apprenticeships or work as mates before venturing out on their own.

If you wish to work for the council, you are best off ringing them and asking what they require. The NIC will have a list of what they require of you in order to apply to be a member, so look on their website. Chances are that if you become NIC/ Elecsa/ Napit then the council will accept that you are competent and leave it at that, without wishing to see any C&G certs you have.

i have 13 years experience just not much testing, i need to gain approved nic eic to provide a letting agent that deal with council tenents.

just would how much testing i need before i am ready for assesment, i passed my 2392 last week so its fairly early days.
am competent with all other aspects of electrical works just the testing im concerned about????

I guess the only thing you can do is test your own house, over and over again using the guidance available on here and via the testing books available until you know all your tests and remember what you need to do

the assesors arent that bad I find That if you ask as many questions as you get asked and show a willingness to find the proper way to do something and explain your take on it , it helps let them know that you know what your talking about and are prepared to learn.As long as you can stand over your work and it complies then your elected.
