Hi guys i was wondering if anyone could give me some advice. I have just installed some spot lights in my kitchen and before i connect them up i want to do a continuity test. I have run the power from a circuit breaker into a junction box, then from the junction box i have run my switch wire and wire to the next light using the junction box system.

Looking at the osg it says you should test at the furthest point, i have tested at the switch and have an acceptable reading, ive testing the power coming into the junction box this is also acceptable. My question is how do you test at each spot light? Using the juction box system when you link the phase and earth at in the C/U you can naturally test the incoming power and switch as they are all interlinked but the spots lights arent. Therefore when you test at the spot light you dont get a reading like you would with a standard ceiling rose.

To test this part of the circuit would you have to disconnect the lighting wire from the junction box and test the lights separatly or is there a simpler way,

Any advice would be really helpful, regards Chris

Hi Schoe under normal circumstances you should have cpc at every avialable accessory, go to the furthest point on the circuit and check the RI R2 reading between live and cpc also this will confirm continunity, operate the switch this will confirm correct polarity, hope this answers your ?.

when i do a long lead r2 test i get a reading at the light fittings and throughout the installation, its when i do a r1+r2 i dont. ive checked all the fittings and there are no loss connections, is this because the lights arent interlinked in the junction box?

I've interlinked the line an cpc in the c/u. And connected Phase from c/u to phase switchNeutral from c/u to light neutral Light phase to switch , switch live(blue sleeved brown) In the junction box,I haven't connected the switch wires just put the in a choc block separately, phase, neutral, earth, is that where im going wrong?

If you've interlinked at the CU then it sounds like you just need to connect Line and Switch Line at the switches to complete the circuit. Once this is done you should not get an open circuit at your lights.:thumbsup

Some of your post has lost me ;)

yes join them together like turning the switch on and there is no neutral in switch just switch wire and phase the neutral should have brown sleeving on it

Yep sorry I missed a commer it should have said i connected phase from c/u to phase switch, thanks for the advice. I'm sure it's something simple I've just never been shown and I want to make sure it's safe before I energise it.

Interlink at the Consumer unit

Join the Line and switch line (at the switches) together to simulate the light switch being in the on position

By doing the above once you put your continuity tester between CPC and switch line at the furthest point you should obtain a reading.

What tester do you use? I have a good guide on how to use the Fluke tester ;)

I have a fluke tester as well, that would be really helpful thank you. Would the above advice work if I connected a switch and turned it on or do the line and switch line have to be connected at the switches?

You would have thought they'd have a switch to flick on and off to engage an override. Not on each PIR but an actual light switch
