This has been posted about a lot but I wanted to ask a really stupid question. I can only run 4mm single g/y to each metal fitting from the board which is dual rcd 30ma. I cannot touch the drops, stipulated by the landlord. Is it acceptable to issue a mwc for this, write a safety letter and label the board stipulating the switch drops have no earth. There are no metal switches only metal boxes...what do people think?...

Balls... That's what I thought. I have those screw caps could replace the switches. But it's just the fact that someone might go and put a nail through the switch drop cable then I'm liable for signing off the circuit...

Re the title of this thread ...There are many manufacturers making metal fittings, that are manufactured to class 2 out there!! So if the client wants metal fittings he can still have them. I think there is a UK website that specialises in class 2 lighting, most of which are of metal construction...

If he wants the existing metal fittings to remain, then you have a dilemma in regards to complying with BS 7671. Frankly you are the ELECTRICIAN here, YOU tell him what the rules are not him telling you!! Who can you see denying any mention of not allowing you to provide CPC's to switch drops, if a tenant get's a good belt or is electrocuted etc??

Exactly what eng says..... don't let landlords push you around and tell YOU what to do. Cos they will!! Tell him the score, either Class 2 fittings OR rewire the lighting OR walk away!
it's hard to walk away, particularly if you need the work (?) but 95% of the time it's worth it in the long run not having the hassle. I'm sure we've all had that one job we wish we never took on?!

:)
