This has been posted about a lot but I wanted to ask a really stupid question. I can only run 4mm single g/y to each metal fitting from the board which is dual rcd 30ma. I cannot touch the drops, stipulated by the landlord. Is it acceptable to issue a mwc for this, write a safety letter and label the board stipulating the switch drops have no earth. There are no metal switches only metal boxes...what do people think?...

In changing a CU you are making an alteration to all of the circuits and so all circuits should then be brought up to current regulations.
By installing an RCD as the sole means of fault protection you are not complying with bs7671 as this is specifically forbidden.

Bs7671 makes no provision for the use of a label in this situation, it was an invention of the NIC.
I have no problem with this as a last resort measure if a rewire is not possible for a good reason.

In the era of 1/044 twin it was common practice to install buried cables in split conduit so chasing is rarely necessary for a like for like replacement. In a lot of installations around here the 1/044 twin was only used for the switches with the feeds being in 3/029 twin and earth.

I fully agree that rewiring is also my first option.
I am not aware of the NICEIC inventing this course of action, but I am aware of it being a recommendation of the ESC. Whether you view those organisations as the same beast these days... well I could understand that.

I have come across plenty of viable split conduit, but also a few that have rusted and sliced into cables when drawing them down. Most circuits round here with no CPC have no CPC throughout, not just lacking on the switch drops.

So you're saying, if you replace/upgrade some electrical equipment, everything downstream needs to meet current regs and be upgraded if necessary.

Kind of, but I'm not entirely sure how to put what I mean exactly into words.
I am trying to say that everything needs to be assessed for its compliance with current regulations and upgraded to comply with current regulations but with the application of common sense.
I exclude anything which is cosmetic or otherwise not related to safety.
For example I wouldn't include anything related to colours of cables or wording on labels.
