no earth terminal. what would you do?

as title. using existing back boxes ( lighting) as original VIR cable in capping and managed to re-use route to save chasing. boxes are tight and nailed in. removal would cause a lot of damage to decor. no earth terminal in box, so my solution was to drill the side of the box and fit screw. obviously a 2mm HSS bit is no good to drill into the brick, that's why it's in the side. would have been neater if I'd gotmy box of ring crimps on site, but hey ho. at least the box is earthed.

Hmm I reckon there's at least 2mm of unsleeved cpc at the cable sheath end.....

yeah but there's 3mm spare in the ring crimp.

If you have only counter sink screws at least use a washer to make a more robust job of it.

i have already said i would be back with my box of ring crimps ( earthing boxes, for the use of), self tappers ( pan head, lugs for the use of) and knipex crimp tool (ratchet,crimps/lugs/for the use of) . the wrap round was just to get the customer some lights safely working (seeing after dark, for the use of).

I think your original fix was quite adequate given the setting - 4 stars. Latest version is better 4.5 stars. I disagree about tapping holes (yester-year stuff when labour was cheap) - a good self-tapper makes a much better gas-tight connection than a tapped hole and a separate new screw in those sort of settings. It is unlikely that a threaded screw is the same metal finish as the back box and so those zinc or nickle plated ceiling self-drilling and tapping wide-pan-head screws with a star washer to spike the CPC or crimp washer are probably the ultimate fix - 5 stars. If you went the tapped hole route, you should really apply silly grease to keep the air and damp out and prevent corrosion of the dissimilar metals in a wall/cement/plaster environment. Gas tight is what is increasingly required for reliable long-lasting good connections. I think you did good!

Personally, albeit not to Tel's normal high standards, the original was perfectly adequate in the circumstances.

When I wake this morning about 3am, and can't get back to sleep, I'll turn on my pc and read this thread from the beginning; after 7 pages & now 96 posts, it will be better than counting sheep! Anybody else got any wonderful ideas how to earth a back box without a prescribed earth terminal, just keep 'em to yourself, for crisps sake

it's compliant. domestic jobs - no wriggle room for the extra hours that would take. original was 1950's no cpc on circuits whatever. customer may want to change to metal switches in future, so cpc's are there.

You were lucky they weren’t plywood boxes.

Yes, somehow fit one of these while the box is still attached to the wall.

Dont bother earthing back box if its that much bother.. just the fascia, after all thats the one that needs earthing if its ever metal..
