It's best to partially drain the tank then use lots of heat from a good torch (can set fire to tank foam ! ) then a good box spanner should get the blanking plug out.
Personally I hate doing it so leave to plumbers unless I really have too !!!

I used to use these:

ÂŁ70-00 (ish)

Then I found this for ÂŁ30 (ish)

The first is made by Rothernberger and the second by Monument but they are of very near equal quality.

hi guys just an update. Had a company come round who quoted 300 to replace the fan, how long till something else went who know. To actually have the immersion put in, which would require nre wiring to the comsumer unit 350.
To replace the boiler with like for like, dont want a combi sorry. 1670, thats with cert, flush and all the other bits and bobs, new pipes for waste to sink unit.
Though that was about the most resonable price id had.
2700 to 3500 is just a tad ridiculous if you ask me.
So decisions decisions.
Decided on the new boiler, the stress of everything has gotton the better of me. financially its wiped me out. But, at least i can draw a line under it, and its one less thing to worry about.
Could have repaired it and it would have been a lot cheaper, but then its always going to be in the back of my mind, when, if, will it go again and put me back in this state.

Would like to thank all of you for your comments and advice and funny antics you have come out it.

Will be posting a new post soon as have another problem. This time with Electrics.
Life isnt dull is it ---

For what it's worth I think you've done the right thing.

Yes, short term your piggy bank has taken a beating but you have some peace of mind in knowing that the new boiler should be reliable and if it isn't will (hopefully) have some sort of warranty with it.

I can guarantee that you could have gone on patching & repairing the old system and it would have cost you more to do it.

Now go & sit in your comfy chair and .. chill :chillpill::sifone:
