Went to view a kitchen refit this week, new kitchen and new rfc circuit dedicated to the kitchen, have a look at the CU and whilst inspecting I see that the 2 lighting circuits, up & down, are both wired with the same 1mm 3&E cable (pre 2005 cable)
Red as line to down mcb, yellow to up mcb, blue to neutral bar and earth to earth bar,
I am relatively new to this game but I’ve never seen that before and the customer says she’s never had any problems with it,ask for any old paper work and the cert (won’t mention the scams name) for a CU change doesn’t mention it but then it also says all IR readings were perfect ha ha!

How does this circuit affect the work that you are undertaking in the kitchen new lighting? How are you installing the new circuits if you are thaking the ceiling down or floor up it may be obvious where the three core & e runs to. Unless to have found this out already.

@Baddegg fairplay to you for admitting your level of qualifications. Many Domestic installers advertise themselves as electricians which unfortunately get our backs up
The forum rules state that we are not allowed to give step by step instructions.
Personally in this situation all I would do is install a seperate DB and wire a new ring and lighting circuit for the kitchen into that.
Obviously there are other things to consider, and you will need to make sure your circuits reach the requirements for ADS which may mean a bit of extra work to the existing installation is needed.

Hi Anthony
Doesn’t really affect my works although she does want spots putting in the kitchen there are lots of spare ways on the board so I can just put the kitchen lights on a separate mcb as well, (remove the existing kitchen light and terminate into MF wago connectors and boxes) the post was more about me having never seen this setup before and getting others views and advise on it,all have been much appreciated I might add

I posted dislike as if the existing consumer unit has enough spare way capacity why a new board.

So what big problem am I not seeing here?

Do you know where this 3 core goes to?

Fair enough
But in that case its even simpler.

Fix the problem and carry out the work, or install new circuits.
Depends on what the customer wants to pay for ?

Dont see why this thread is 5 pages long ?

Fairly sure this thread is exhausted now, just trying for the 6th page ha ha
Big thanks to anybody and everybody that contributed it is really appreciated and useful to us boiled ones! Ha ha ha
