Hi all,
just a query regarding notifying building control i was just looking on my labc website to see about the notification process please tell me if i am right or wrong
my brother wants some work done New ccu outside light and garden lighting. i am not registered with a governing body but hope to be soon
on the Wigan council website it says i have to notify 2 days before? if not registered with said rip off merchants no names then i have to get a registered approved contractor to fill in the schedule of inspections and the schedule of test results???????? wot
I have 2382-10, 2393, 2377 and logic full and defined scope level a,b,c award also just done 2391-10 waiting for results I was under the impression i have to certify my own work and no one else can
i want to use these jobs to register with elecsa and i am not charging my brother to do this work, and i am deffinately not paying labc, a approved contractor and then elecsa for one job this cant be right can it??????
please can someone tell me if i can register with elecsa use this job for assessment and just notify through them

Yes mate you can use this job as part of your assessment doesnt matter if its in 6 months time i didnt tell you that then when you get registered as an approved contractor then submit it to building control job done

cheers guys
on there website they are trying to say i have to notify then sign for design and construction then get someone like yourself to inspect and test it thats not right is it
you couldnt sign for my work as you wouldnt have seen erection methods or any idea if i had done it correctly or not they are talking out er better ot say or the big guns will shoot me
at the end of the day do they have a clue what they are talking about

the job needs garden lighting, outside light new ccu tails and earthing conductor to replace existing fuseboard and a ccu that was fitted by a so called fully qualified Electrician who left 6mm main bond all melted and unsheathed tails not protected looks like he just pulled fuse as seal missing neutral conductor of one of the tails to the meter bare copper showing the two circuits he did to the new CCU one for some sockets and one for half the lights in kitchen straight through top of DB with no trunking or conduit not clipped just clothes line style so ip rating not complied with etc etc

so what should i do register with elecsa and do job notify through them or do job first then register with them and then notify labc what a load of tosh no wonder all you who did full appreticeships are so angry about Part P and all the nonsense its created

You must notify the council of the works (and pay them some money) BEFORE you do the work.

It is THEIR responsibility to make sure the work you do complies.

Either that or leave it, do the work, join a scheme and notify through them.

Hi jason
I want to register with elecsa and use this for assessment
so are you saying do the work and then join scheme and finally notify through them
or
notify building control do the work then register with elecsa on wigan council website it says i would have to notify sign for design and construction and get a part p approved spark to inspect and test and sign for that. i think they are wrong i have to sign inspect and test my own work then they check it
cheers for replying guys just want to do it right way from the start

I got forms for registration so will ring elecsa and ask them

cheers Amp David,
thats the way no wonder you all get hacked of with part p especially all you guys who did full apprenticeships and all other quals ,expenses to be told you have to pay more for some joiner to tell you if ya work is compliant or not. I never finished my apprenticeship 24yrs ago but always been involved with electrics new build and rewires, some commercial and little industrial mainly this is why i chose to do a rip off course to finally get some quals and then get approved always tried to get back into a apprenticeship or similar but was always told there was no help with training or i was to old
cheers guys i appreciate all the good advice i always get from the likes of yourselves this forum has been one of the best things i ever found on the internet cheers to one and all

Hi guys,
just a few further questions on changing the ccu. I have had a look at my brothers installation and its a complete mess,
at he minute there is a 4 way wylex fuseboard 3 ways being used which controls the original istall for the house about 6yrs or so ago, he had his kitchen extended into the attached garage. The electrician fitted a 12 way split load with 1 rcd protcting 6 ways, he has installed a ring in new half of the kitchen, a cooker circuit on the protected side and downlights in the whole kitchen, which are
ELV off transformers under the floorboards also a third of the old garage is still there stud wall seperating from kitchen witth sockets for washer and dryer etc also a flourescent

I have contacted supplier British gas to fit main isolator ÂŁ39 not bad
I want to remove the existing wylex fuseboard and transfer to the existing new board or replace them both completly as the new ccu the so called elecy has just drilled through the wall for sockets etc used T/E not protected and not clipped just coming to the new board from all directions
the two boards are fitted on a large board with the meter Equipment etc
on the new board he has installed the cables through the top of the board so there are holes where they enter and fail to meet the IP4X
It looks a complete mess the bonding he has taken to the new ccu even though he has fitted a new 4 way MET at side of the cut out ( no Bs951 label) No certs no labels on the board for the rcd or periodic
ispection notice

1. would it be better to replace both boards with a new split load dual rcd and is it better to bring the cables through the backboard into the new board so maintining the IP rating
2. should the board be fitted directly to the wall is that ok or installed on the existing board with the meter etc and run trunking to protect cablles

sorry for large post but I have a fair few questions as i would like to use for registring with ELECSA
i try to post a few dodgy phone pics but not sure how to on here how do i post pictures??
cheers for any advice

To use pictures in your posts...

Look at the very top of this page.
Just under the big 'Electricians Forum' logo is a line of text "User CP Chatrooms Register FAQ ...." etc
These are links. Click on the User CP (CP = control Panel)
Look down the left hand side of the CP you will see links
Select the 6th one down which is 'Pictures and Albums' to get to the Albums page
On the albums page there is a link 'Add Album'. Click on this.
Give the new album a name, description (if you want though it is not necessary) and select 'Public'
Once in the new album you will see links to upload pictures.
After you have uploaded each picture, it will be displayed and underneath it will be two boxes
Select and copy all the text in the second box titled BB Code
You can now go into a thread and paste this code in your post so your picture will appear in it
Use the 'Preview Post' button to check it is as you expected before you click on the 'Submit Reply'
And please do read back all your words to yourself before you submit it. It's amazing how many posts on this site don't make sense or are really hard to decipher because people don't check what they typed before posting

That ought to get you going with adding pictures to your posts.

When I fit new DBs I fix batten to the walls then the board to the batten and bring cables through the back. Tidiest way for me. BTW, I couldn't even start an apprenticeship as I was deemed too old at 30.

What I got told by elecsa was "as long as your in the system for approval - then complete the work and backdate certificates as we don't want you not to earn a living" - in other words - we want you to pay us the money and if you aint earning then you can't pay

Cheers to all ,
as usual lots of good advice i will contact Elecsa Monday they have already sent me the pack with the registration documents so i will check with them
ive got our kid to get a isolator fitted so i can work on it at convienience to him as his mrs is a child minder from home
thanks to guys for the info on posting pics will try to get better ones tuesday when supplier fits isolator before and after shots lo li will give it a go cheers
and also many thanks for the info on registration and installation of ccu
when we did new builds at first 1988 we either used to fit direct to wall then for damp issues if outside wall we started to use spacers ( conduit cut to size) to keep away from wall and if it was a larger house with mains in double garage we started having to batten down from top of garage with 3x 2 and board then clip cables to that and fix ccu at bottom
cheers guys for help

here are some pics from our kids i wil take better ones tuesday when supplier fits isolator. there are lots of issues that need correcting also can someone please explain why there are two incoming supply cables for a TN-C-S single phase supply?
