I had a bathroom fitter explaining to me that my wiring to a fitting above a shower cubicle did not work. I said show me, he got out his neon screwdriver and sure enough it did not work. I said what you standing in? He looked down at the plastic shower tray and just did not get it!!!
Must have got one of those zone 2 neon screwdrivers...
Easy mistake to make :D

As a very basic very crude live or not tester
would be ok for basic handyman type repairs
But because neons require very little current to operate
then they are pron to false positives, or ghost voltage.
the older type test lamp with incandesant lamps is more reliable
as it put a real load on the circuit. which will quickly bleed away ghosts !

He's probably the same bathroom fitter who disconnects the bonding clamps on the copper hot n cold. Then fits a lovely new bathroom suite, runs his new plastic pipework and then reconnected the bonding clamps onto the plastic pipes.
I'm sure I have a pic somewhere.
