Hi All,

Just finished my 2330 Level 3, I have my 17th edition and taking my 2391 in September.

I am being told that I now need my NVQ to become fully qualified sparks.

Is this totally correct and needed.

A very grey area and I need to clarify this.

Thanks for your help.

Dave

In the eyes of the Joint Industry Board (JIB) You do need to be NVQ Lev3, but that only to be recognised by them, dont worry, if you have the 2330 L2 & L3, 17th and 2391 thats qualified enougth if you have the time on the tools

Absolutely. You need to do the NVQ Level 3. Put your mind to it and fnisish the portfolio of evidence. I know that it's a torture but it has to be done to qualify as an Electrician.

Best of luck.

why is that then  you only need your nvq if you want to go jib and accept their terms and rates
i am no less an electrician than any other spark with my 2330, 17th and 2391, i choose to work for myself though, running my own business quite happily without nvq ;)

2391 is not required to be an Electrician, only for Approved Electrician.

Look at their site it says or equivalent, then later down the page says am2 is equiv.

AM2 is not equivalent to an NVQ Level 3. It merely forms an essential part of the NVQ Level 3.

2391 wasnt the question  you state that you have to have nvq to be recognised as a qualified elctrician which isnt true ;)

According to the ETT and the JIB it is essential. In fact I have threatening letters which I kept about not completing the NVQ meaning that you could not qualify as an Electrician. I did finish it, despite it being a complete and utter pain in the ---.

I'm not questioning your qualifications, or anyone else's for that matter, but the fact is that an NVQ is an absolute necessity. There's no point saying otherwise - the JIB won't listen.

NVQ or equivalent
This equivalent usually means Time served apprenticeship
2330 is college based and the NVQ is work based
NVQ is required for you to call yourself a FULLY QUALIFIED Electrician
The NVQ or equivalent proves you can do the job in a work environment not just at college

2391 is for EXPERIENCED Electricians who have a wide experience of Inspection and testing on site.
Too many inexperienced candidates enrol and hence the very high failure rate. Wait until you are ready and have the confidence you will pass.

Remember You should not take a driving test after one driving lesson
You should not attempt 2391 without at least a couple of years on the job after qualifying

PS I am a 2391 Assessor The training courses often do not teach the practical side of the assessment only the theory. The theory Exam is memory based no books so you need to be fully conversant with a wide range of installation practices and BS7671

Dont try to run before you can re-wire

Yes you do. Once you have done this you can claim your JIB card to prove you are a competant electrician. You cannot obtain the card without it.

Type into Google 'How to become an electrician' and follow the link on the IEE (IET) for a pdf file. They are not connected to the JIB.

you dont have to have a jib card. if he wants to work for himself there is no requirement for nvq3

Hi Platty1005,

Thanks for your comments

I have been on the tools for over 10 years, but not directly as a spark.

I just feel that with NVQ I am being asked to pay £ 700.00 just to provide photos of my work over the years.

With the 2391, I am not trying to " walk before I can re-wire" But is the natural progression in the qualification curve.

Many time served sparks with 2 years or even 10 years on the tools still fail their 2391 exam just because they cant remember facts from the BRB, or are just not up to testing.

I am not trying to " drive after one lesson" but just trying for the piece of paper that confirms / tells me what I already know. " I can drive" !!!

Unfortunatly in the present climate when applying for jobs, the only question up and comming sparks ever get asked is " do you have 2391 or Do you have the right to work in this country" pushes all sparks to try for 2391, even if they might not be experienced enough or not.

Enough of the rant. Good luck all in the sparkies quest for work.

Cheers

Dave
