Hi All,

Just finished my 2330 Level 3, I have my 17th edition and taking my 2391 in September.

I am being told that I now need my NVQ to become fully qualified sparks.

Is this totally correct and needed.

A very grey area and I need to clarify this.

Thanks for your help.

Dave

you only need to do the am2 if you are a new starter in the trade (i.e apprentice). if you have been working in the trade as a mate or improver for a couple of years you dont need to do the am2 to get the 2356 nvq 3.

however as we all know its changing really soon, so if you need the nvq3 to get the gold card get registered on it now before it ends.

sorry if I appear to be rude when I go on to contradict you here, but to my knowledge, and for everyone's sake here you are wrong.

I understand that the NVQ level 3 is actually made up of 3 components, 1 - 2330 levels 2 and 3
2 - site diary
3 - AM2

any further understanding of the requirements to get a JIB card welcomed.

the nvq is not made up of the 2330 site diary and am2
the 2330 is the technical certificate
the nvq 2356 is a seperate qualification you dont need one in order to obtain the other
i completed the nvq level 3 without the am2 i done a four year apprenticeship whereby you complete the nvq alongside level 2 and 3 2330 so at the end of it you have both the underpinning knowledge (2330) and competent practical level (2356)

I have just registered with XS training to do the NVQ2356 , I have been a sparks for 13 years 2360 , 16th , 17th and 2391
8 years ago but if you want JIB card you need it unfortunately , it's all done on-line haven't started yet looks long winded
but there you go.........

The AM2 isn't needed if you're an adult trainee. To be honest I think it should be a requirement, whatever age. I didn't have to do it, as I paid for my C&G exams & NVQ myself and was classed as an adult trainee.

There are a lot of so called sparks who could do with learning how to bend conduit, fit trunking and a little control basics.

I was under the impression that 2356 was closed for new entrants ? have they extended again ?

Agree, but unfortunatley johnboy the new AM2 has no containment what-so-ever, the trunking and conduit are already fitted in the booths and you just sling the wires in - can't for the life of me understand why they changed it.

NVQ or equivalent
This equivalent usually means Time served apprenticeship
2330 is college based and the NVQ is work based
NVQ is required for you to call yourself a FULLY QUALIFIED Electrician
The NVQ or equivalent proves you can do the job in a work environment not just at college

2391 is for EXPERIENCED Electricians who have a wide experience of Inspection and testing on site.
Too many inexperienced candidates enrol and hence the very high failure rate. Wait until you are ready and have the confidence you will pass.

Remember You should not take a driving test after one driving lesson
You should not attempt 2391 without at least a couple of years on the job after qualifying

PS I am a 2391 Assessor The training courses often do not teach the practical side of the assessment only the theory. The theory Exam is memory based no books so you need to be fully conversant with a wide range of installation practices and BS7671

Dont try to run before you can re-wire

Well thats answered the question of where I should go next, think it will be level 3 rather than just rushing into the 2391 like some have said I should! : )
