hi everybody
ive been an electrician for over 10 years now. last year i got made redundant and have been in and out of work since. i have phoned agency after agency and they have work if you are JIB
which i can get but only old man apprentice one as i dont have the NVQ 3. i am very good at the job worked in most places I.E powerstations, food ind, water treatment, houses, factorys you get the pic. so i ring the JIB up yes you have to do it even if you know more than the assessor himself. so then i ring round after a few phone calls i find you can do it in 3 months at a cost of ÂŁ755 ouch just said im out of work. so my question is is there another way at all to get it i have 17th edition just need that back to school crap

The guys on for some advice man, not a lecture lol. I'm in a similar situation. I am currently trying to become fully approved but the NVQ Level 3 is the only thing holding me back. I thought an HNC in electrical engineering, Part-P, 17th edition, 2391, 2392 and ECS would have been enough to get the card but I may have to go through the NVQ now, which feels like taking a step back instead of progressing further.

it is beyond belief that you can be in the job so long and done all aspects of it and get loads of letters sorted saying you are capable of doing it all, yet is not good enough it just a money make scheme if you ask me. as there is no other way i will have to sell my body to make the cash

There is something called the European Social Fund, which is administered in this country by the DWP.
It's supposed to provide funding for education and training to help people improve their work prospects.
They have a department called the Skills Funding Agency 0845 377 5000.
Might help, might not?

Jim if you get your ECS test and sign up for delta etc etc JIB will grade you as trainee Level 3 (This is the old improvers grade) Im going down the same route as you and found that agencys arent intrested unless you hold a JIB (Most of them havent got a clue what it is or the different levels)
Alot of these jobs just say must have JIB and you will..
i no loads of good sparks who have nt got there NVQ3 for what ever reason it never happened.
It doesnt make you a crap spark as some ppl will have you believe, Its all about experience which you have got..
Hope this helps and good luck!!

Hi im new to this forum, you can get the nvq level 3 through college on the jsa, the only thing you will have to pay is your exam fees, which i think is about ÂŁ200 its the cheapest option, if your still unemployed when you start the course they give you a yellow form take it to the job centre and they will stamp it for you and they pay the remainder of the course and you just pay the exam fees, and as far as i know this will be the last year the colleges run the nvq level 3 as the course has been re-structured again, I hope this helps you.

Hi,

A bit of a tagged on question, but I am in a similar situation, less qualified in some areas but more in others.

For electrical exams I have 2330 and 17th, I am doing my NVQ so if I was young and had not been to uni I would be an apprentice.

However I have been told that due to my level 4 quals I cannot be an apprentice.

So I have a couple of questions.

1: What am I currently classified as?

2: What would I have to do to squeeze myself in to the 'provisional electrician' - I do not understand what this level 2 thing is, it seems much lower than the 2330 lvl3.

Any suggestions, I am far too old to be on an apprentice wage and need help getting a different title!
