Will open it up at some point when I've completed on the place.
 
It's 99% a contactor. It's probably going to be underfloor heating cables laid into the screed and effectively used as a large storage heater as Dave explained.
 
None really you can't be that sure of things with an OP who imo doesn't know what he is about as far as electrics are concerned.
bear in mind, pete, OP is a trainee, and he's in the process of buying the house so unable to open the box, so to speak. ;)
 
Pete, I'm an old fart in a different field. Just thought a few of the old farts or 'experienced electricians' on here might recognise a bit of old kit! :D Still what do you expect from a Barf supporter;)

Talking of pee, looks like I'm going to have to get my head around septic tanks and the like but suppose that would be one for the plumbers.
