So called accreditation bodies
They are all a scam not official bodies and all can be scammed to get in, they are only interested in income. (And who can get the biggest share)
Look at the money they have in reserve.
BS 7671
why isn’t this just published on line with and info accessed like any other data base.Referance books soooooooo yesterday(Kids tell me)
(Books available for those who don’t have computers)
Saving the planet, trees, ink, transport etc.
Saving the hard worked spark having to take update courses how to use the stupid, overcomplicated thing. (They even do guide to explain the first guide, then other sub guides to explain other bits)
(More pollution)
All so when they get them wrong and have to up date it every year, this could be done on line.
Saving the hard worked spark having to buy another expensive book, another course and throw the other one in the bin, (more pollution)
So you do an apprenticeship, take your city and guilds, get your Gold card, and spend the next 40 years carrying out all types of installations from inception to completion running jobs for large companies, public bodies, etc.
I have always tried to keep up with the job (dead easy now with the internet)
I am a member of one of the big 2 and have been for years, it used to be ok but over the years it has become very expensive and intrusive. I find the interrogation/assessment very stressful now.
It used to be 3 years now they have wangled it to 1 year or 18months (all at considerable cost)
They check that you have all the latest books, your paper work (same as last year)and that you haven’t become un safe in the time in-between.( The person taking out my assessment wasn’t born when I Started my own business)
If it was possible for me to make a mistake that caused real harm to anyone or thing (anyone can make a mistake) then nothing could prevent it.
If safety is so important.
Take the domestic supply down to 110v as in other countries.(The supply authorities are supplying a dangerous product)
What about the IPAF card have to renew every 3 years why (money)
Now the HSE have joined in £145 per hour if they find something wrong on site. (No motivation there then)
Lets start a campaign to fight back at these parasites.(I will run it if any bodies interested mail me if you are)
Rant over for now.

I could go on for ages. But who cares? Or who will speak up?! Not many. I've already made move to change career. I just hope this one can hold on long enough to fund training for the next.

Come on jib!!!!! Move your ---! For everything electrical! Have a say at least. For god sake. You should run the safety register!!

this is it. once upon a time, holding a JIB card meant something. no need for all these scams. JIB approved meant that you were competent. now it's meaningless. you can hold a JIB gold card, and be deemed incompetent unless you pay £500 per annum ( plus calibration costs etc.) just to line the pockets of faceless suits.

who will speak up?! .

well there a couple of dozen on here who already have, but we won't get listened to, it's all about money, we have said that 20 times in the last week across half a dozen threads, money makes the world go round, sparks are just puppets in the lining of the pockets of the rich, anything that makes them money will make sure we won't get a say.

As Mr rockingit has already pointed out a few times, everyone should take a look at BSI.
An internationally recognised and respected institution.
They have a self cert scheme, if you can find it on their website.

We need a rep. A rep that knows the trade. Knows the sectors. Knows where we all are. Knows where the industry is. Has a vision of the future. Can represent that and us. Cannot be bought. We all stand divided. We have no real say until if ever we unite.

at least jib require qualifications (although they should realise the nvq3 wasnt always around) and they should run the trade.

£25 membership and proof of qualifications - certs sent direct to labc with proof of jib membership, and scrap the other muppets

As I see it, the problem with the current system is there's nothing in between the quick courses and the 3 year apprenticeships. I had to go down the quick course route as it was impossible for me to give up 3 years of my life to start again. Afterall, most of it would be completely wasted as I've got a lot of experience from other jobs and courses.

Personally I wouldn't mind having to sit a formal exam or assessment every year (not the assessments for the money grabbing scams, maybe C&G or similar) to prove competence. In my current job it's a requirement that we go back to training school for a few days once a year. Pain in the backside, but it ensures we're all up to date and know our stuff.

There's always going to be an issue with domestic electricians competence being judged by a company which wants their cash.

Other problem of course is that someone who did an apprenticeship and fully qualified 20 years ago could be completely out of date but still claim to be competent.

But it is so easy to keep up with the regs now,(on the internet), If you are properly trained and motivated.

As I have stated before. I am in the system.

It cost me best part of £1800 a year to belong if they have 3000 members that’s at the lower level of turnover.
5.4 million pounds , many will be above that. What on earth do they do with all that money?
