O

Octopus

One of my neighbours has just had an electric door fitted. The fitted commented that the garage didn't have an earth .... so I have just had a look

Sure enough 2 core SWA runs from a SFCU in the lounge (not glanded to the back box) out to the garage where the SWA is glanded to the back box.

SO I'm thinking that either

A. I run a new 3 core cable from the house to the garage (less than 1 metre) or

B. I run a 4mm CPC (in protection) from the SFCU to the garage ..

B is cheaper ........... anyone want to give me a reg number why I can't do it this way?

Is the 2 core visible on the outside of the house wall before it goes into the wall?

Just thinking that if you can intercept the 2 core between house and path, cut it and gland into new enclosure on outside wall, and run new cable into back of FCU? Could use TnE in conduit, so no disturbance to internal plasterwork, no digging up of path?

Just pop a few bricks out then! Sure to find it lurking in the cavity!

38 years without an earth and no problems.
I wonder what a cost benefit analysis would make of 'earthing'.
I wonder how much it has cost over the years to ensure all installations in the UK have an earthing system and how many lives it has saved or serious injuries it has averted.

Lets say as an example in the last year it has cost ÂŁ1 billion to ensure adequate earthing systems are in place, new ones put in, testing inspecting etc and that this has saved 5 lives and stopped 100 serious accidents from occurring.

Could this ÂŁ1 billion have been spent more effectively in terms of saving lives or is it money well spent?

I realise I'm leaving out all sorts of other variables and my figures are just taken out of the blue but it just got me thinking.

A mere jot in the ocean compared to the amount spent on highways, railways and airports...... safety thereof.

Why would the RCD fail … yes it can happen but then it may not. Without it you have no protection on the TT System
