Hi,

Just turned up at a job locally to fit a shower, would have taken half day as will be a pig routing cable etc, anyway, I did look the other week, then arrived today to do it and there's a garage door in the way!

I have just said to the customer, I cannot do it as cannot safely work in the box, not only that I cannot even get my screwdriver in. There's no way I'm removing it as its full of springs

I did manage to just get the cover off using the right angled screwdriver, but am not risking tightening up a breaker with a 10.8kW shower on using it as need to make sure its tight and cannot access anything properly.

So, do you think the plonkers who fitted the garage door are at fault here and they should come and help?

UPDATE: The garage door people are coming next Friday to disconnect the runners and then reconnect in the afternoon once I have done my bit.

Nonsense, he knows full well that it will be blocked again once he is 'down the road'.
And there's a nice thread on a public forum to prove it if he tried to claim ignorance!

He warned his customer and isn't responsible for what said idiot customer does after he's finished.

It's a far from ideal situation but at the end of the day we are not responsible for what our clients do after we leave.

Sorry sir I can't do that in case you do something stupid after I leave?????

I'd be more concerned that the CU is exposed to the elements with the garage door in the open position myself.

tbh I would say to home owner.

there are 3 options

1. I connect up, walk away and runners put back blocking it.

2. shorten/extend cables to move board right upto ceiling or lower

3. pull clips out of the wall and raise board up and bending cables out to create space (will look terrible but cheap fix)

personally would rather do option 2

Replace the CU with a similar pre-made up adapter box with Din rail mounted maintenance free connectors and extend all circuits down to lower position.

Access should not then be required or on a rare occasion, ensure all earths are not commoned together in the joint so testing results at the DB will be clear.

What is exactly nonsense then dave?

He knows what will happen but is he responsible? As i said its still more accessible than ones where you have to move stuff.

If a customer asked you to put a socket at low level and then says im going to put a fridge infront of it do you refuse? maybe we shouldnt install sockets at low level just in case??

Where did i say he could claim ignorance? nonsense indeed.

them cables might pull...

them cables might pull...

That was my initial thought when I saw the cables coming in at the top. If most of them have a bit of slack then why not drop it down as much as poss, and charge if a couple need extending. Hopefully the customer will see sense and say yes.

I suspect they will pull lower, it's just loft space above in the garage anyway.

i would plead ignorance but equally I'm not responsible if they put the runners back in the way, I'll tell him it would be best to move it, but if they don't want to pay there's not much you can do.

You could move it up and to the left, or install 'garage c.u' for your new circuit. Had to move one up n over a tad today as new kitchen fridge-freezer cabinet made it inaccessible.
