I was recently asked to go and quote for a full rewire of a 3 bed house in my local area (Bristol). I went there today to have a look and the customer said they had already had one quote but were worried that it was a little bit steep. Around these part a basic rewire of a 3 bed is being done for around £3500............ well the quote they had which was for a standard rewire (white plastic accessories) in a empty house was £9500! This was following a PIR the same company had done which stated "Needs rewire as does not comply with BS7671",the house is 35 years old of course it doesn't comply with current standards, it was not even an that bad condition, defiantly does not NEED a rewire although defiantly recommended if they want a fully up to date standard of property.

The bottom line is that this company produced a PIR showing the property to be unsafe and then massively over priced the work required, no wonder the general public think we are all trying to rip them off!

Makes me sick.

well you get your sales man hat on and and say il have you upto date and give a written quote , and hope this gets you more work . cause if they were considering this tells you more money than sense..

Totally agree with you mate, unfortunately there seems to be a hell of a lot of this going on. It's not just big firms doing it either.
Gotta congratulate you on your honesty for not just saying: Oh yes it does need a re-wire badly but I can do it a lot cheaper than that.

And that would make him just as bad as the scammers that did the PIR!

nothing wrong in saying heres my quote and it will be upto full standards.. you want the work or not.. so what your saying is rubbish.

you dont have to be just good at electrical installations anymore you need to sell yourself.. so take back that would be just as bad as the scammers..

It's just the way the open/free market and capitalism system works. There's no such thing as 'robbery' you can quote what you want as long as you don't lie about what's required according to the regs and you don't bitch and moan if somebody else undercuts you.

Well if you want to go around rewiring properties that are in good condition and do need rewired then fire on.But in my opinion you are fleecing the customer!Whatever happened to being honest?

thatll be like a client of mine who rang me asking why the company who installed her CU 7 years ago, are now saying it needs a periodic.. @ 140 quid..!!
