testing the water a little here.
i have been doing a wide range of domestic work for years but not commercial.. I have never coinsidered doing the PAT test training, or buying the test equipment. But recently i have been approached by a some customer with rental properties to see if i could PAT test the appliances left at the house, as well as test the installation.
Has anyone gone to trouble of spending out the money for training and the test equipment, and then seen a return into real money through their day work. if so has it been worth while. i just get the feeling i am going to be asked to do this more, each time i do a periodic in the future? I do not have any intentions of taking this added training into anything other than domestic, (getting too old!).

many thanks

As I've said earlier, you will not make any decent profit from PAT testing on a smaller scale. What it will likely do is to generated some spin-off work because:-

1, You have now got into their business premises so make sure they are aware of all of your capabilities - don't forget to leave your card with the appropriate person and certainly staple a business card onto the PAT Invoice.

2, When you go around PAT testing, keep your eyes open and bring to their attention things that need to be done - especially anything that's a potential safety hazard.

One word of caution, don't bother PAT testing for clients who are obviously not interested in spending money on their electrical safety. Many customers are only getting PAT's done because their Insurance Company or Council have got on to them, so they are having to comply by doing the minimum they can get away with.
Don't bother with these 'irresponsibles' & say you are too busy!!!

Good Luck!!
